My thanks to everyone who let me know that lawyer story was

an old joke. Since I’d never heard it, it was brand new to me.

No wonder I couldn’t verify it on real lawyer award sites.

Goodness, lawyers pat themselves on the

back a lot.

Stubborness is not a virtue

I’m having computer problems. It was going to be a simple

hardware install.
Yep. Simple. Nine hours and and some fancy fiddling later I got

the ethernet card to read a driver. (Yes, I’m still on dial up

- let’s not go there)
I installed the DSL software…phhht. Zip. Nada. Nothing.

Stubborness can be a very self-defeating trait. I retraced my

cyber steps. Ziltch.

I’d phoned the ethernet card company. They told me what I

already knew, after 37 minutes on hold. My system is supposed

to have a driver. (I knew that!) That’ll teach me to jump in

on my ISP’s big sale. The ethernet card company is swamped. The

post office is swamped. The computer store is swamped. My ISP

is swamped. What can I say, it’s a good sale.

This isn’t plug and play, it’s plug and pray.

Anyway, I stubbornly retraced my cyber steps more than once,

more than twice….phht. Zip. Nada. Nothing. I phoned the

ISP.

It took them about 3 minutes to tell me my OS is corrupted. It

shouldn’t be trying to going through a WAN connect. It just

won’t go through a WAN. Ok. Stubborness can be a form of

denial. See, the thing of it is, I’d had that terrible thought

about five hours before, but simply refused to give in to it.

It’s only a computer. A machine. I can fix it.

No. Twelve hours into this ordeal, I admit defeat. I’m more

wired than my computer. I admit my stubborness hasn’t gotten me

any further than I was twelve hours ago. I’m not even sadder

and wiser, just no closer to DSL. And now I have a machine

that didn’t like my stubborn tinkering. So, if I disappear into

some time void where the blog goes dark, I’ll be back when I

can. Promise.
