A Montreal church is now the temporary home of an Algerian couple seeking sanctuary after being ordered deported from Canada. The couple took refuge in Union United Church last Sunday. Mourad Bourouisa and his wife Yakout Seddiki have a son who was born in Canada. The federal government has told them they will not be deported if they leave the church while a decision is reached. They have decided to stay put. A churchsanctuary case in Kingston Ontario a few years ago also drew national attention.
21 members of the same family were slaughtered by the Islamic Armed Group in Algeria this week. It was the fourth attack on civilians this month. 100,000 people have died in the
conflict between Algerian forces and Islamic militants in the country since 1992.

Canadian TV News
Daimnation and Flit are in a discussion about CBC Newsworld and CTV NewsNet.
I have to respectfully agree with Daimnation on this one. And as much as CBC Newsworld is semi-competent, I’ll take it over CNN any day. The CRTC regulations have tied the hands of CTV news because of the CBC interventions. Daimnation ends on this note:

In other words, if CTV is allowed to directly compete with Uselessworld, people might like the non-taxpayer-supported network better. And that’s just not how things are supposed to work in Canada. It’s so…so
American.

Reports from the BBC are saying many of the hostages did not receive the antidote in time. The Russian government has not

said which gas was used, but speculation continues that it was BZ. (see below)
