The lead story in Canada last night wasn’t Iraq and the US or UN, it was our own problems with child pornography. Canada has a profoundly sorry reputation for it’s tolerance of this crime.
That’s why I found the press conference with this police official so stunning.
Turf wars abound between law inforcement here, and resources are minimal.
“We need help,” said Detective-Sergeant Paul Gillespie, head of Toronto’s sex crimes unit.
The investigators summarized, for the first time, Canada’s role in the major child-pornography sweep that has uncovered thousands of suspected pedophiles around the world, including the recent arrest of British rock musician Pete Townshend.
“If you watch a six-month-old baby being raped, you’ll never feel the same again.
And what does our head fed have to say?
Solicitor-General Wayne Easter disagreed, saying that Criminal Intelligence Service Canada already co-ordinates investigations.
“Their point of view on this is basically wrong,” Mr. Easter told reporters in Truro, N.S.
I can’t wait for the back peddling on this one. And I hope the media keeps it’s eye on Detective-Sergeant Paul Gillespie. The truth won’t win him any brownie points with the brass.
When Companies don’t Pay Up
If you have a moment, I suggest heading over and reading Andrew Careaga’s post on his difficulties with his publisher over at bloggedy-blog.
I think this is where advocacy in the blogosphere can pay off. If you look at his comments section, you’ll see various suggestions from others.
Interestingly enough, as I write this and know the bloggers commenting thus far, US bloggers are mostly advising legal action. International bloggers have suggested alternatives with one exception.
What would you advise?
4% of the US GNP goes for legal fees in these sorts of matters. 13, or 30, or 300 polite query emails to his publisher from readers, could make a difference here.

Do your homework before you give….This is an article that will be of interest to Canadians who give to charities. 1 in 6 ‘charities’ in this country spend more on administration and overhead then in the actual work. There are some guidelines for pro-active giving.

Mr. Easter (oh, his surname is so stinking ironic, not?) would feel different if it were his kiddie in the porn. It may be time to change our national colours from red and white to grey and grey.
Try to Thrive,

Hi Owen: His comment was so inexcusable I really hope the public and media is all over him. Maybe that way, we can stay red and white and help clean this up. Blog on!
Toronto police need the resources to fight crime and they don’t get what they need. Mayor Miller is not likely to give the police the funding they need for a helicopter, more cops and more computers so they can track porn online.
Then there is the connection between drugs like marijuana and porn
