Canada’s ambivalence is showing again.

Nobody does ambivalence better than Canadians. And Canada is deeply ambivalent right now, as the first U.S. bombing runs are made over Iraq.

Any number of conflicted Canadian attitudes are bumping into one another in the media, in the coffee shops and in people’s hearts.

Email virus
Yep. There is an email worm called Ganda which is exploiting peoples interest in what is going on in Iraq. The worm has a variety of subject lines such as Go USA and Spy pics. Be extra careful with email attachments.
The net is slow again, and I’ve been hit with TCP’s UDP’s and two back door trojans in the past hour. Grrrrrrr.

A protester chained himself to the wrong building the other day.
He wanted to protest at the US Department of Energy and wound up tethered to a building housing a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that advocates for residents in rural areas.

If you are in court receiving a sentence of eight years for aggravated assault, it isn’t a good idea to moon the judge.

Dear God,

Creator, Sustainer of life. If the political structures of any country are to be shaken by force, may your Church also be shaken. May the force of which is taken to remove the tyrant in one land be of no lesser strength than the extent of the shaking being done within the church. If the tyrant of the people is to be removed by force, may the tyrants within the church be removed by no lesser measure. May those who have pushed for war equally push for moral change. May those who spend $1 to destroy spend $10 to rebuild. May your mighty hand of Justice find favor with those who weep. May your Church find use of this moment to share You with their neighbors and build community. May this all be over quickly. May there be few casualties. May you come quickly, Lord Jesus!

I guess it’s clear that I’m not in favour of this war. I won’t get into all the reasons why; a lot of other people have done it much better and more clearly than I have. Maybe later I’ll come back to this entry and add links to some of those people. My reasons are all over the map, but in the end they mostly come down to my faith. I can’t imagine Christ commanding his church to participate in this war. It goes against what I think true Christianity is about, and it makes me cry to see how others try to use Christ as a reason to bomb and starve and destroy.

I feel like I should say something here about God and war. The truth is, I don’t know what to say. I honestly don’t know what God thinks about this war, whether he despises it, whether it is part of his eternal plan, or both — or neither. I don’t pretend to know the mind of God, but I do trust it, which means that when it all falls down, even in the midst of impending war, I have peace.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and in the end I’ll probably be doing more good by kneeling down to recieve a cross of ash on my forehead and be reminded that I am dust, we are all dust, and to dust we shall return, than by desperately signing up for protest after protest after protest. So I guess that’s what I’ll be doing. It’s all I know to do. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison.

    Hey Bene,

I’ve been reading your blog off and on, and I finally remembered today to link you. This site is great!

I’m pretty sure you’re against this war, but I’d appreciate your thoughts on my post. I’m trying to avoid making a statement, in favor of seeing the good God can bring out of every situation.

    Sincerely,
    John

    Hi Gary: Thanks. Fixed.

    Hi John…ok, Posted. Thanks.
I have not amd will not come out with my thoughts and feelings for or against the war, what I’m doing in my blog roll and in posts in presenting as many bloggers with as many struggles, thoughts and feelings as possible.
My hope is that I can focus on the sacrifices and suffering by everyone and things we can do about it. Blog on!
