As I write this, BBC journalist Stuart Hughes who has been keeping a weblog, is in hospital, fighting to keep his foot and grieving the death of his collegue, BBC cameraman Kaveh Golestan.
Four media people have died in Iraq since the war began.

The story is told by his BBC collegue Jim Muir.

…..I ran around the left side of the car to the back, and threw myself on the ground.

In the seconds that that took, there were two more explosions, then silence.

Then Stuart was shouting. “I’m hit, I’m hit.”

Rebeen was shouting. “It’s a minefield, it’s a minefield.”

I got up and found Stuart, around to the right of the car. He was hopping on his left foot.

His right foot was badly hurt, the heel ripped off, bones exposed.

But he was not bleeding badly and I knew he would survive.

I opened the back of the car and got him in. I told him, “You’ve been hurt, but you’ll be all right. You’ve done the course. I know you’ll be all right. I promise you.”

I tried to arrange it so he could not see his foot. He was very brave and remained completely conscious throughout….

Any news on how he is doing? It seems that all the (well, 3 I know of) Iraqi blogs have dried up for one reason or another.

It’s the ‘one reason or another’ part with Iraq blogs that is hard to take. There are so many factors, from power outages to death.

I was over at the BBC looking today. Nothing new.
Given that he is a journalist, I guess keeping an eye on his blog is one of the better ways to know.

Getting your foot nearly blown off and seeing a friend die and possibly still being in an RAF field hospital, I doubt he’ll be posting soon. The foot was the most obvious injury to his collegue. Maybe the BBC will get enough inquiries to keep readers updated.
