A Canadian politically conservative publication called The Report, has ceased publication. The transition is being made from publishing to advocacy. I’m sorry to see it go, it had a long run of 30 years.
I’m genuinely sorry to see Colby Cosh out of a job, it goes with the territory but it still sucks pavement.
I know there are sensible, smart editors and publishers out there. Hire the guy, you’ll be making an investment in one of the best writers in this country.

Domestic Abuse
This study may well be pointing out the obvious to some, but it is a good thing a myth is being exposed.
Women are just as likely as men to use violence in a domestic relationship.
Little-talked-about involvement of women in mutual aggression with men is “the third rail of the domestic violence field,” says Richard Gelles, dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work. “Touch it and you get electrocuted.” Both he and Straus have done studies that caused fiery controversies.
Gelles says the lifetime risk of a woman being struck by a male intimate partner is about 28%. And “depending upon who is doing the survey and how you measure it, you could get numbers of up to 50%.” But he says a man’s lifetime risk of being struck by a woman is also about 28%.
Inside Canada’s level 4 bio-lab
Canadian medical scientists are dealing with SARS, mad cow disease and West Nile, among other things. Here is a rare glimpse inside the Winnipeg facility which has garnered world wide attention in recent days.
SARS
Hong Kong has passed the mandatory 20 day period for new cases of SARS.
296 people died in the region. Beijing, Taiwan and Toronto remain on the WHO list.
Meeting other bloggers
I got a kick out of Ireneq’s post on an upcoming blog meet. It’s the throw away lines I enjoy.
You guys won’t believe me, but I’m actually very shy in person. (Stop sniggering! See, I knew you wouldn’t believe me!)
How can a journalist be shy, you ask. I have the hardest time asking awkward questions like, “Don’t you think what you just said reveals your bias?” Of course, such questions are likely to get the person’s defences up, so they’re sort of self-defeating, but sometimes it’s the only way to get an answer - ask a direct question. Which I’m too scared to do!
I fell into broadcasting from print, and one of the initial challenges was a blessing in disguise. It was a useful and disciplined job that helped me overcome my stuttering, simply because speech patterns are so important in the medium.
Most of my news collegues are introverts.:^)
When a blogger comes back
Many pixels ago in the blogosphere there was a blog called For What it’s Worth.
For many reasons the blog died. It was been resurrected under the title Simple Green. What a great post of purpose.
I want to foster an atmosphere of conversation and sharing. I hope that the ensuing discussions in the comments become even more interesting than the original essays.
I refuse to feel pressured about my output. If I write three essays in one day and you don’t hear another word from me for a week…well, deal with it. I won’t let this site run my life.
Most of all, I intend to have a good time sharing ideas with all the rest of you out there in the “blogosphere.”
By jove, I think he’s got it. Blog on!
Canadas Privacy Commish
Saw this one coming. Federal Privacy Commisioner George Radwanski resigned today. He’s under investigation by the Auditor General, a commons committee and Revenue Canada. Basically he spent a lot at the taxpayer’s expense. Hello Mr. Radwanski. If you want a $450 dollar dinners with a staffer, fine, but asking us to pay the bill isn’t in anyone’s best interests, now, is it?

Thanks for the link, Bene! Now I guess I really have to write some good stuff =) And, how on earth did you find out I had re-launched? I was going to send an email to all on my blogroll as soon as my first real post was up…what a surprise to see you mentioning it already! Oh, and just for the record..it’s “Simple Green”…not “Greens”. Again thanks, and God bless. Blog on, indeed!
Ok, fixed the typo! No great mystery, you were in my log and I hadn’t seen you for awhile so I popped over to see if the link worked.
One less email to send eh?
If half of what they’re saying about Radwanski is true, then, well… that guy has quite a set on him to write that!
Bene, you must’ve accidentally linked to the post below the one you’re actually referring to. It’s http://www.ireneq.com/mt-archives/000278.php not 000277.php!
Would you believe that half the time I still don’t know what on earth I’m doing at the job? I meet people I’m supposed to interview with no idea what I should ask them. Eek!
Ok Irene, link fixed. Thanks
The issue of domestic violence is a difficult one Bene and one in which I have considerable expertise (as a counsellor not a perpetrator :-))
If we look at it simplisticly, in terms of physical damage, which seems to be the approach of this study, then women are far greater at risk since they are, usually, less big and less strong than their male partner. Thus in a physical altercation they usually come off worst. Women might hit just as often, even initiate, but they do far less damage.
The real issue is power and fear, that is one partner exerting power over the other. In this area the statistics are far less clear, partly because male victims are far less likely to report than women and also the radical feminist movement have had a lot of political clout in this area and that further clouds the picture.
Still it will take a bit to convince me that men are experiencing the same level of victimisation that women are. There is a large number of very violent, vary scary men out there. (more than once I have feared for my safety in a major way).
Domestic violence is not really about being hit. It is about living your life in terror and being totally dominated by another human being.
