People living in northern Japan must be weary and scared.

Three earthquakes, 6.2, 5.5, and 5.3 are bad enough, but to experience 600 aftershocks must be very very unsettling.

Psychologists say that earthquakes are the most difficult natural disaster to go through. To have what we count on to be solid, move, swallow and shake; hits people on a primal emotional and psychological level.

400 are injured. Japan has called out it’s army to assist.
Aftershocks and rain have made the region very unstable.

Canada’s Sexual Assault Centre - Saskatoon?

Saskatoon and Saskatchewan lead the country for the number of sexual assaults reported to police, according to a report released Friday by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics.

At 160 incidents for every 100,000 people in 2002, Saskatchewan’s rate was almost double the national provincial average of 86. Saskatoon, with a rate of 155, ranked No. 1 among Canadian cities.

So, how would you interpret these statistics?
More sexual offenders live in Saskachewan?
Or that support systems for reporting are better?

We do know most sexual assaults happen in the 15 to 24 age group.
We do know most sexual assaults aren’t reported.
We do know most victims are under 18.
We do know most victims know their assailant.

Man.. why do I miss all the earthquakes? It sucks not having been in one for about 5 years now. I miss them dearly!

It would be interesting to see a break down of those sexual assault statistics. For most people Saskatoon is a very safe city in all respects. Unfortunately there is a stark contrast between the aborignal and non-aboriginal communities in Saskatoon. Many aboriginals are moving from the reserve to the city and most of them are young. The unfortunate reality is the pattern of the sexual abuse that was started decades ago (cultural transition, residential schools) with is still with us.
