Ok. The power goes out in London, England during rush-hour. Millions of people are affected.

It’s back on in about 1/2 hour. What’s different about this scenario and the one that played out on the east coast of North America recently?

1) An alarm goes off. A human being pays attention and flips the circuit.
2) It’s already under investigation.

(A friendly reminder to my fellow Canucks - how we allow our power to be distributed is an election issue)

Blogrolling.com is a victim of it’s own success.
It is a tremendous service, but it’s designer has to stop new sign-ups for now.

The CN Tower
I think engineers have every right to be proud of what they do, but didn’t they say similar things about the Titanic?

ar arr arrrr Anglicans as trekkies…or is it trekkies as anglicans? Denominations don’t need to beat up other denominations with the kafuffle in this one. In the heat of this kind of battle, a little humour can’t hurt.

If you want to see some fine writing in the blogosphere, I recommend Carnival of the Vanities. It is well hosted this time by Creative Slips.

Have you ever noticed that many bloggers have creative spurts every once in awhile? Wanderings of a Post Modern Pilgrim has been posting eloquently the past few days.

Economics 101
It appears to be economics week over at connexions, and I for one am actually learning things. It’s probably because there isn’t any political snarking or holier than thou I know more than you do scorn being tossed about. Dunno, but it’s quite readable and understandable, which, when it comes to numbers, money and sundry concepts, is saying something. If I (of the cannot read numbers crowd), got up my courage to make a comment there, I don’t think I’d be flamed into the middle of next week.

Power cuts in the UK are pretty darned rare, I only recall one or two prolonged ones. This fault was in the lower voltage 275kV backbone grid, some steps away from the regular “low voltage” transmission, and one step down from the 400kV backbone grid that links to the power stations.

I did my internship year from Hell at National Grid, who runs the UK power distribution system. It gets pretty rigourous testing, including environmental damage tests and flashover tests, finding out what voltage you need to blow the equipment apart.

Lecture over, you can relax now.
