It’s late, but I couldn’t pass up sharing this. ar arr arrr.
Jeff Jarvis of BuzzMachine is a professional media person and a blogger.
And when he takes on his collegues he doesn’t spare them.
This is classic. A reporter isn’t impressed that Jarvis posted some of an email interview with Jarvis before the reporters story came out.
Reporters will have to get accustomed to bloggers doing this for bloggers like to be transparent and they like to be timely; if they are thinking it, they will blog it.
Talk to me, talk to my blog.
I’ve had bloggers that have wanted to be a bit testy in email, and as a reporter I’m not overly impressed with the job I do. I enjoy it, but what I write and do isn’t written in stone, and any sense of entitlement doesn’t work with the internet. So, if someone wants to get huffy in an email to this blog they are fair game.
Talk to me, talk to my blog…gotta love it.
I understand his upset at being scooped by his own interview subjects (and I apologized when I did it, though what I used didn’t end up in the story anyway).
But I told him that I think the solution is simple: Ask the subject not to post the quotes until after the piece appears.
Most of us would be happy to comply if we are asked nicely. No point in reporters getting upset and feeling ’scooped’, blogging is blogging and I know it can be difficult for media people to grasp what this hobby and passion is about sometimes. They can learn.

Makes me wonder what news reporting in a postmodern age will look like (nothing in stone, everyone scooping everyone else). I like the idea of “fair game,” though. There’d be a lot less politics in life if everything was always “fair game.”
There are big egos in journalism….and I dare say some in blogging.
The rules are changing whether the egos like it or not.
I won’t put up an email someone asks me to keep private….but having been on both sides of this particular fence, I can’t stop smiling. Blog on!
well well well
I got my first break into journalism this week. I wrote the piece just like I write my blog. The editor was nice to me and called it “dynamic”. I want to be a book writer, not a journalist, but you know, you get your breaks where you can find them.
yeah, there are big egos out there.
It’s about time the rules changed. As for this blogger, God is dealing with my ego. I may cut my long curly hair this week, as a sign. For I am ashamed of the sense of privilege and greed out of which I communicate with other people.
Funny, that when I recognized that fact, I was accepted with a front page feature.
May our redeemer, Jesus, never allow me to wander from his love.
Quick someone send me a nasty email so I can post it!
I like the idea that the more underground media is becoming less underground. I think mainstream media has a bit to answer for in terms of misleading the public…but hey, that’s just me.
