What is a god-blog?
A weblog written by a Christian(s) who believe and adhere(s) to historic orthodoxy.
Breaking down a portal
There are 458 links at JesusJournal.com The portal is on a privately owned commercial site and is relatively static. The owner collects links, provides for self-linking and the owner’s policy dictates bloggers cannot be removed. The portal debuted in the summer of 2002. I looked at weblogs here in the first few weeks of October 2003.
There are 239 active links.
113 dead links.
21 redirected links
13 not-updated from August 2003
Five are not blogs
I counted 18 repeat links
Of the live links there were:
156 male bloggers
49 female bloggers
43 group blogs
17 unknown
Of the dead links that are archived there were:
60 male blogs
20 female blogs
6 group blogs
Of the total there were 227 self-defining Protestant and 49 self-defined Catholic.
165 US
16 Canadian
5 Australian
4 UK
2 Japan
1 each from Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Philippines, Brazil, Isreal, Norway and India.
Because Who Links Who and BlogTrack don’t keep track of the number of blogs that have ended, JesusJournal.com was an opportunity to look at discontinued blogs.
Of blogs started in 2001-2002 that have been discontinued, the shortest blog lasted a week, the longest 16 months. The average god-blogger who has stopped lasted 2 months.
30 were males in their 20’s.
13 were female ranging in age from 21 to 48.
6 were male in the 30’s and 40’s.
The rest were not readily identifiable.
St. Blogs
The term St. Blog’s Parish was coined by relapsedcatholic in 2001.
A list of 203 Catholic blogs is current and actively maintained by a blogger and there is also a web-ring. I looked at the St. Blog’s list the third week of October 2003.
3 404’s ( not necessarily discontinued)
53 not updated
4 re-directs
4 sign-in blogs which I ignored. (personal bias - I hate sign-ins)
8 bloggers were readily identifiable as priests
21 anonymous or unknown
12 group blogs
3 couple blogs
119 male bloggers
41 female bloggers
2 Canadian
1 New Zealand
1 Spain
1 South America
198 United States
Surveying 100 at random:
21 Males are in their 30’s and 40’s
10 Males are in their 20’s
2 Females are in the 20’s
5 Females are in the 30’s and 40’s
I have about 1000 more blogs I’m going through. As you can see there are obvious overlaps and it is impossible to tell how many god-blogs are online.
I’ll be looking at the final US portal next installment.
God-blogs differ from the Pereus study in the gender and age breakdown.

It’s an interesting study you’re doing. Just checking in on the Official Canuck!
Take care and keep in touch!
OK, you need to spend some time outside now mate.
interesting….
as we’ve anecdotally observed before - the god blogosphere is dominated by males - where as in the ‘real world’ blogs are written as much, if not more by females.
The US figures are quite staggering also - but not a surprise.
Also I have to say Jesus Journal is pretty out of date. I’ve applied three times to be added to their list over 7 months and still am waiting to be added.
I suspect he’s stopped adding links (or his listing form is broken) maybe JJ is itself a dead link?
Darren:
JJ is a snapshot in time for research purposes…I’d have to know the names of discontinued blogs to look them up in a search engine, it could be dead, dormant, or under different ownership.
I’m hoping someone techy and bloggish will be kind enough to dig up the numbers of computers owned in the US. Although their population base isn’t huge compared to the english speaking world, PC access or ownership is. Blog on!
I think I’ll take Ali’s advice and get some outdoor time.
B.D., You have way more patience than I! ;-> Still, I’m happy to take advantage of your exhaustive surfing. I haven’t come across JesusJournal.com before. I’ve been scrolling through their list of blogs and see a few old friends that I haven’t visited in a while and a few new-to-me blogs that I’d like to visit. Thanks
I see you’ve got a bit of time on your hands at the moment Bene?

Found this really interesting, especially since I’ve seen some surveys stating that (European) women tend to be more interested in “spiritual” things.
Oh, and isn’t outdoor time overrated anyway?
PS: Very nice blog you’ve got going. Really appreciate it!
okay, coool.
you know, sometimes the Holy Spirit leads me to do stuff and I have no earthly idea why. but I’m faithful.
or was this HS inspired?
Hi Anita:
I didn’t a burning bush if that’s what you are asking. Nor did I hear a still small voice on this one. Just pursuing a passion. :^)
I try to live my life daily submiting my rights - this is just a survey - not an important speech or sermon.:^)
If this information is useful to others that’s great, and if the HS wants to use it to inspire them, I’m all for it. Blog on!
I still enjoy the blog, Bene!
