Time for Canadians to pile on the Prime Minister’s ‘people’, and exercise our diminishing right to free speech.
Jim at Blogs Canada has set the tone for the type of letter that some litigious liberals need to see.
This dust up has made the rounds, and made the news, and well it should.
I think Paul Martin’s handlers thought it was cool to put up a website entitled PaulMartinTimes.ca. That’s fine. Wasn’t it put up back when Mr. Martin was PM in waiting?
However, a spoof site ticked someone off who has a law degree and too much time on their hands. Or someones with law degrees, tech degrees and too much time on their hands.
Hello Liberal people that like to sue. Get over yourselves, please. We have real problems beside your pride and image to deal with in this country, ok?
There is an election coming up. Can’t you keep busy that way?
Here is my email to the “>PM’s office.
December 29, 2003
Subject: PaulMartinTime.ca legal action
Dear Prime Minister Martin:
It is my understanding that the Liberal Party has threatened legal action against the internet parody site PaulMartinTime.ca.
Please pass this email on to someone who can deal appropriately and promptly with this problem. Our federal government publically promotes the internet, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and access to all.
I find the action of your party towards this site reprehensible and I wish to express my profound disappoint with the disconnect between the behaviour of the litigators and the ideals your party and the Canadian people supposedly hold. I respectfully request your party drop this legal action as promptly as possible.
What possible threat is this political parody site in a country known world-wide for this style of humour and openess in the political arena? This apparent abuse of power will not sit well with voters capable of distinguishing humour and Ottawa’s sudden lack of it.
Thank you. I shall be watching to see what decisions are made.
Sincerely,
etc.
Even if the lawyers back off, I doubt anyone will be holding their breath for an apology. It is a bit scary that members of the Liberal Party can use a law firm at whim for this nonsense. At any rate, I will not be using the real PaulMartinTimes.ca site from now on. This kind of pettiness is too prevalent and I can get the news I need elsewhere. The Liberal party webmaster was the gentleman who set things in motion. The law firm letter doth protest too much about speech and freedom don’t you think? Dissent is a reality that needs to be dealt with more carefully than this blunder.
Politicans are infamous for using TV parody shows for thier agenda. Time to back off and grow up guys.

So in other words, his first act as Prime Minister was to shut out the voices of his dissidents. Sounds vaguely familiar.
I honestly don’t know if Paul Martin will get wind of these shinanigans if people don’t write his office and tell him we aren’t happy about bullying and intimidation.
A reporter says the PM’s office said the site would not be sued. Shoot, that could have been the answering service saying that.
No one has seen any proof of that yet that I’m aware of.
So, it won’t hurt to raise our voice.
