There has been some scoffing from some who think SARS was blown out of proportion last year. Fair enough.
I did a SARS watch and explained why it is important, so you can check the archives for posts and links to last years outbreak. There are medical people world wide without an agenda, and understandably very concerned. Quarantine is not an option. The archives explain what we know about contact and speading to date.

Now it’s back, and as any corona-virus is predictably mutating.
There is no cure. Crude supportive treatment last year caused permanent damage in many patients. Some will never recover, and it is hitting age groups that normally can recover from varients of these kinds of illness.

China has a confirmed case, and now the Philippines.
These cases were not the result of lab mistakes.
Last years outbreak showed how unprepared the medical people all over the world were and how they fell short on infectious procedures.

A confirmed case of SARS in China and the possible infection of a Philippines woman has triggered fears that the contagious and deadly disease has made a comeback in Asia.

The Chinese Health Ministry said the illness contracted by a 32-year-old television producer in the southern province of Guangdong “has been confirmed as a diagnosed case” of SARS since the disease was contained in July. The World Health Organization in Beijing also confirmed the case as severe acute respiratory syndrome.

My prayer is that we are better prepared, and that as this virus mutates, cases will be caught quickly. I also hope I don’t have to set up a SARS watch this year from spreading of the virus. And I hope that treatments improve.

One Response to “SARS”

I am in health care in the USA - we were inundated with bulletins about SARS and were told what to do, etc. But what I find interesting is that influenza kills many thousands annually, and does not usually get the same kind of press.
I also think that the SARS issue, like bovine spongiform encepolopathy (AKA mad cow) show that God was pretty smart in forbidding the consumption of carnivores (Mosaic law). We have turned vegetarian animals into carnivores, and we are paying the price.
