This is one of the things I like about blogging.
Jeff Jarvis of BuzzMachine is outraged.
I haven’t seen him this angry since his posts about his experience in 2001.
Given that he is a media figure, critic, writer, etc., his venting on his blog makes what he has to say quite interesting.
I’ve never heard Howard Stern and I don’t know FCC standards of conduct.
I have broadcast in the US, since it was straight news, I wasn’t concerned about violations.
A company called Clear Channel in the US pulled Stern off the air.
It is my understanding Stern is syndicated and this is a private company.
If I’m reading this correctly, violation of FCC codes result in fines.
It is also my understanding the job of a shock jock is to push boundaries.
Is this a free speech issue, a monetary issue, a regulatory issue or all of these issues?
Evangelical Outpost responds to BuzzMachine.
I’m not going to be stupid about this.
If Stern said what the news report says, then I’d pull him too.
But I’m one of those polite Canadians who thinks that on air conduct matters.

Hey Bene,
Jarvis is way off the mark on this one. He claims that government coercion is the reason that CC pulled Stern. Yet the FCC has being fining Stern for years ($1.7 million in 1995 alone) and it was never a reason to take him off the air. The fact is that the public, not the govenrment, is the one that is setting the calling for the “censorship.” Times have changed and Americans are drawing a line in the sand when it comes to public decency.
Sometimes I don’t know what is more scary…
the public or government regulations.
