How does the Prime Minister ‘call’ a federal election?

It is called dropping the writ.
This morning Paul Martin walked across Sussex Drive in Ottawa to the Governor General’s residence. He gives the GG the election date that has been picked (it has to be within 36 days) Elections are held anytime within a five year period.

This visit to the Governor General formally starts the election process. The writ dissolves the Assembly so that there are no formal members during the election period and Parliament doesn’t sit. The Executive remains in place - the PM and the Cabinet so that continuous government is in place in lead up to the election.

Canadians will go to the polls on June 28th. We vote for 301 members of parliament.

I’ve always wondered does the writ get picked up again at the election, or do we get a new one? You never hear about the writ unless it’s being droped.

We’re due a federal election this year too, down under here. Date not yet announed but hopefully only a short campaign. Usually 4-6 weeks. Would hate to have months of it.
