Canadians following the report of fire on the HMS Chicoutimi were shocked to learn a crew member is dead.
The Chicoutimi (che-coot-au-me) was handed over by the Ministry of Defense in Scotland Saturday and is one of four Victoria Class long-range patrol submarines. Their purchase and the problems have been a source of contentious debate in Canada.
Lieut. Chris Saunders died while being airlifted to hospital in Ireland.
There are two British frigates, a tanker, and tugs on the way and fishing boats are standing by where the sub is drifting approximately 100 nautical miles off the north-west coast of Ireland
Nine of the 57 crew members were given medical treatment.
The submarine crew battled two fires, not one as previously reported.
Reports came in this morning that another sailor is in serious condition.
