Long before the internet there were clipping services - businesses that scoured print publications and extracted what a client asked for.

Then clipping services came along for broadcast media.

There are a fair number of companies and individuals who make a fairly good living ‘clipping’ from the internet.

Now BlogSquirrel is available for people and corporations that wish to purchase the service. It a key word search specifically for weblogs.
I found the last paragraph a bit disconcerting, perhaps it sounds good to a business, government and NGO’s and a little less so to a blogger. The language of war seems almost second nature in North America, doesn’t it?

By using BlogSquirrel to automatically search, monitor and “clip” blogs, you and your organization can build an effective “early warning system” to identify problems and issues that may threaten corporate or brand reputation … or present new opportunities for business growth.

“early warnng” might be medical as well as military, although as a Canadian the DEW line might come to mind.

The nasty ap might be to bring SLAP suits on bloggers who bad-mouth a product. For instance, Bobby Alison-Gallimore had blogged on his long-running struggle with a major electronics retailer on a lemon of a laptop; the retailer didn’t come out looking good, and can only thank the Lord that Bobby was only in law school.

I’m cynical enough to believe that is what it will be mainly used for. Unfortunately.

PS: I’m impressed. I don’t know that many people know about the DEW line.
