CARE and Doctors without Borders pull out, now World Vision.
The evacuation announcement came days after the presumed execution of CARE International’s Iraq director Margaret Hassan.
“The move follows violent activities across Iraq, the death of Margaret Hassan and the previous death of World Vision’s own head of operations in Iraq,” Geoff Shepherd, World Vision Australia’s director of emergency relief, said in a statement.
Mohammed Hushiar, World Vision’s Iraqi head of operations, was killed in Mosul on Sept. 29 by unknown gunmen.
The organization made the decision to leave Iraq before Hassan’s kidnapping on Oct. 19 but delayed the announcement while she was held hostage, Shepherd said.
World Vision’s Iraq aid workers are from New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Africa. They registered displaced Iraqis, helped build schools, distributed medicine and worked in hospitals.
