US President George Bush will take time from his (working? state?) visit to Canada the end of the month to head to Halifax to say thank you.
I think that is appropriate and past due.
8 thousand Americans were stranded in Canada on 9/11 and Maritimers took them in until they were able to get home. Life long friendships were made.
Halifax is enough of a military town he’ll get a more restrained reception, and the Pier is known to US security people.
I am extremely disappointed the President won’t be addressing the Commons.
All we’ll be getting are brief press conferences and sound bites. I would have liked to see what his speech writers wanted to say to our government and to the people of this nation.
White House handlers were concerned the President would be heckled, and didn’t want that shown on US networks. Heads of state often address the MP’s and it is to the benefit of all. The MP’s are perfectly capable of protocol, and I think an opportunity is being missed.
It is expected that 20 thousand or so anti-war protesters will converge on Ottawa and that will make for more colourful coverage than a speech.
I have a question for my US readers.
Do you know what issues your president will be addressing during his visit?

They might have to gag Carolyn Parrish :-^
Could he be greasing the skids for the Democrat asylum seekers? Ah, wishful thinking.
Seriously, though, you might try “Ask the White House” (http://www.whitehouse.gov/ask/).
LoL.
He has to have some good foreign photo ops, so we play the straight man. Beats seeing him yank one of his body guards out of a melee.
Ask the White House eh? Do that and get back to me, okay?;^)
Carolyn Parrish promised to behave herself. I believe her. I think she could gag herself for a speech and be on her most MPish behaviour - it would be the before or after that might get a bit sticky.
I would be so disappointed if Carrolyn Parrish behaved herself. We need her. I think I will vote her for PM someday.
