When the US made the decision to go to war with Iraq, debate on blogs was at the least lively, mostly polarized and at the worst, quite nasty.
Between discussions of US policy, just war etc, war-bloggers went on a war path about the uselessness of UN weapon inspectors. There were WMD in Iraq, stockpiled by the evil Saddam Hussein and only the US troops were moral and smart enough to find them and show the rest of the world what wimps and idiots we all were.
Thousands of us were caught up in the debates. The US did send in inspectors. Their interm report was released this fall. One of the reasons inspectors are home is because the situation in Iraq is too unstable. But the biggest reason remains the initial findings. They are finished and are not going back.
While the blogosphere is going on about the CBS report this hasn’t passed by unnoticed.
Intelligence officials have confirmed the US has stopped searching for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
They say the chief US investigator, Charles Duelfer, is not planning to return to the country.Mr Duelfer reported last year that Iraq had no stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons at the time of the US-led invasion nearly two years ago.
The existence of WMD had been the stated reason in Washington and London for going to war with Iraq.
Mr Duelfer said when he released his interim report in October that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had still had the desire to restart WMD programmes.
One of the key points of discussion in the public sphere is that Iraq shipped out everything to do with a weapons of mass destruction program before the US arrived. The first casualty in war is still the truth.
Saddam Hussein remains in US custody and elections will take place in two weeks. Because of the ongoing war, Sunni nonparticipation and security pockets of the country will not be voting.
Rathergate
I read on a blog somewhere that the release of the CBS report would be the most discussed topic on blogs. I see Little Green Footballs is angry because Dan Rather didn’t apologize after reading the report. (I guess what I saw on CBS news when he announced his resignation and apologized to viewers was just a dress reheasal)
