Telephone scam: “$99 vacation”

The Telephony Unit has been advised that many employees have received a
long-distance call (from 1-305-675-6263 or 567-3100) advising that they
have won a 5-day vacation for only $99. The recorded message asks the
winner to dial “9″ to speak to an operator.
This is a scam. If you receive such a call, please hang up and do not
press 9. If you do, others will be able to make long-distance calls
from your telephone line and charges will be forwarded to your bill.
We thank you for your cooperation.

Not only is it a scam, but the automatic dialing system they are using spent the better part of Friday calling every 911 trunk we had in our system. Because the calls came from out of country, Bell couldn’t shut them down.

Just got a call from the same crook, and found your blog with a Google search on the number. But the part about being able to steal long distance service by dialing 9 is a myth; at most, it may work with some private exchanges, not with residential phones, and it requires getting you to dial additional digits. The caller is undoubtedly a crook, but can’t steal from you that easily.
got a weired number calling my cell today so i didnt answer. went and searched for it on the net and it came up as this muber here. Not too sure about them being able to get long distance from my phone but i’m just glad i didn’t get charged any minutes to answer it. i hate these dam cell companyies and their rates!!
My aunt received 2 calls from this number. The caller stated that she held property in Miami, FL….blah, blah. My aunt does not own any property and definitely not in FL. Please warn others about these scams. Thank you.

Just got the phonecall, they’re selling timeshare vacation. They give you the trip almost free and they get you with the timeshare purshase. They cannot use your phone line for longdistance call.
Apparently some home phones aren’t getting zombied.
For all intensive purposes for phone companies and companies with trunks it is like a virus.
It’s a scam, and even if your personal line isn’t subect to hijacking it’s best just to hang up.
US phone company infrastructure may have a better handle on it than Canada did.
Ok So I got 2 back to back calls from these ass clowns pressed 8 both times so they would “remove” my number! How can we stop this from happening? Is there anything we can do? Some please get back to I would greatly appreciate it.

Just got this call myself. I phoned my telco to have them lodge a complaint on my behalf (using pre-recorded messages for telephone solicitation is illegal in Canada). The rep I spoke with said an outside caller can not gain contol over your phone by getting you to dial 8, 9, or any other digits.
I just recieved a call not more than half an hour ago. (305) 675-6263 I did not pick-up. Searched the net for area code and found florida then I ended up here. Thanks.
I got their call on my cell while I was roaming in the US…thank you for the $2 charge idiot. Now I got 2 calls at home. When I pressed 9 I got some clicks and an guy who sounded half drunk when he answered “hulo”. What the hell is going on with that number?

I get the call every few days around 4PM . I was just hanging up until I got sick and ired of them and wanted to ask to be removed from the callers list.
As soom as I started asking about company info (location, supervisors, etc.) the operator immediately HUNG UP ON ME! A practice that is unheard of in telemarketing. I smelled a scam from a mile away, but didn’t think they could hijack your phone number like that.
I called the phone comany though, and any LD charges that I claim aren’t mine will be taken off my bill. Which is preety much all of them as I never call LD.

I got a call from them on 02/17/05 at 1:18pm. I thought these types of things happened to other people. I am glad I didn’t pick it up.
They are royally getting on my nerves. They call my 3 lines… From 214-279-0990. How do we stop this.

Well they got tired of calling us at work, tieing up the 911 lines… gee, we got tired of listening to them too!!!
It was reported to phonebusters , and they are working with their counterparts stateside to shut them down.

p.s. garym is right, the “9″ thing won’t cause toll theft from a private phone, and most company pbx’s have now been programmed to not allow this type of access any longer.

we use Rogers, and we got 2 numbers only a week ago. I guess where they found our numbers.
I think this is a side business of someone who has an access to customers databases.

I just received this call from 214-279-0990 on my Telus cellphone. I immediately called Telus about it, and the dude told me there was nothing I could do about it, with regards to using up my airtime.
The message is simply a recorded message, and it didn’t do anything bad, but I have received it twice before, and it’s annoying. I generally don’t get telemarketer calls on my cell.
I got the call too. I’m in Toronto and *69 the pricks. Then googled the #.
The whole convo was
Me: “Hello?…….HELLO?”
Other line: “…………”
Me: *click*

I am really glad I received the call because now I know who was calling me at 2am from the number (214) 279-0990 and what NOT to do. I had done the samething by calling the number back (but of course I blocked my number
) and it stated the number did not exist. The reason I even stumbled upon this site was for the mere fact that I just moved to a new state and hadn’t yet given out my new number, it really bothered me to know who had called and I wanted to find out. Thanks for the info.
I just got the call from the Dallas # on my cell phone. I’m with Rogers. I didn’t pick it up, but i called back and the number apparently did not exhist.

I got this call on my cell about 15minutes ago and it was definately a little creepy…i did the msn search and found this so now that i know i’m emailing everyone to let them know about what’s going on…i’m with bell and i’ve never had random callers like this before.

Hey guys. I work for a company with many phone numbers attached to our company. They are not just calling cell phones. They call actual phone lines. I recieved this number a million times today. I also got it a few times a few weeks ago. We yell at telemarketers here because we are a company, so I hit 9 to get someone to yell at them and she acted like she could not hear me. We are having our accounting look at our phone records but who knows? We are informing everyone and having Bell block the number. Hope it works.

I called Bell and they said that I have nothing to worry about for billing other than if I answer the call.
I got the same call just a few minutes ago. I keep pressing “9″ or “8″ to take my number off but they freaking wont stop calling.
I entered my # in the http://www.donotcall.gov website. If I get another one, I am going to report them and chase them down.
I got family plan with 2 phones. Insterestingly enough, I just got call from 214-279-0990 a few mins ago on both phones @ the same time.
Fortunately, I didn’t answer. I googled this number and lead to this blog. It seems guys from this number never want to stop calling.
We’ve been getting these calls a lot! Nobody is being spared, and I mean nobody. I work in the Government in Canada, and my coworkers have been getting them, along with our work cell phones that are with bell.
I dialed 9 and there was silence for about 10 seconds:
Her (southern US accent): Hi are you interested in our Vacation blah blah
Me: May I ask how you got this number?
Her: We randomly selected 32 people and you’re one of them.
Me: Is it possible for you to give me your number so that I can you back? I’m at work and I’m sort a busy.
Her: I’m afraid I’m not allowed sir. You have to respond now. Thank you for calling. *click*
She then hung up.
I hope someone catches these losers. I hate them.
I had a call on my voice mail with no msg from the same number 214-279-0990.

Me too! 214-279-0990 calling me in Canada on Bell Mobility. Listened to part of the message, hung up. 11:50 March 8th. This has been going on since Feb.16 from that number according to this page, so obviously this isn’t being shutdown based on what people have been doing so far. New ideas anyone?
Got the call from 214-279-0990 this morning around 8am, it rolled over to my voicemail but they didn’t leave any kind of message. I’m in Georgia, been getting these kinds of calls from different illicit numbers for the past 2 years. I suspect they’re robodialing through all phone numbers looking for valid numbers, and for valid numbers of people who actually answer their phones, to generate valid phone lists for whatever other purposes they can think of.

Why can’t anything be done? Thought it was family from Dallas. I so rarely answer the phone when I KNOW who it is, so there’s no chance I would pick up.
I just got another one of these calls (I get on average 3 a week). I followed through to contact the operator and he hung up on me. I went a little furthur and researched who the phone carrier was and called them to complain. They’ve told me they have taken the number out of service because of numerous complaints, but these scammers are hijacking the line somehow. The phone company sounded very sincere & frustrated. Too bad I didn’t have the time or I’d sign up for their timeshare scam, go and question them point-blank during their sales pitch.
I received that call today too and i didn’t pick it up and got home and check on the internet.. and found this information.. Execellent work everyone.. Keep up the work and we will put these A-holes out of commission. Thats one of the perks about the internet and call display. Can you believe it? I think everyone’s getting the same idea…do a reverse phone look-up, then search the # on google…that’s how I as well ended up at this site. They left a message yesterday at home, and today on my cell phone (missed the call though…good thing too)…

Hello we are from Brantford ON and I have just been scammed also. 1st I received a phone call to my cell and then 3 hours later we receive a phone call to our home phone. The best part is that my home phone is unlisted with permanent name and number blocking, so I haven’t had a telemarketer phonecall for many years. However, I am naive and pressed 9. But thanks to Google and this website I have called Bell Canada, Bell Mobility and Brantford Police and so we should be safe. Mind you the Brantford Police have said that they are also getting inundated with phone calls…10 in the last hour……..

What I can’t figure out is why telephone companies aren’t able to block this.
Once they receive a complaint and block, it seems to flood other trunk lines. Like a virus.
Phone busters is going 24/7.
Customers need to report this and not pick up.
Considering the millions of trunks, this could take awhile.
I am from London, Ontario, Canada. Our phone number is unlisted. My boyfriend and I have Bell Mobility as well. They have called all three lines within the last two days. I have also been a target to these *&%$ers. If your don’t answer during the day their sure to call you at night. I’m really glad that I looked this number up. They call back to back, as if it was an “Emergency”. I guess that “do not call list”, must really mean, “Please do call me”!

Personally.. I’m a vindictive motherfucker. 219 is a texas phone number, and although they probably aren’t actually in texas (just bouncing the calls or something) I shall be there in a few weeks, so if I can track them down, I’ll tell them you guys sent me.

Another Londoner here. I think this is the second time these jokers have called my cell; it’s the first time that a Google search turned anything up. Glad to know that I’m not missing anything important with them.
I got the call too, on my cell phone which isn’t even listed and my cousin got the call from them on his phone which has the ‘zapper’ to avoid telemarket and computer calls, this is fuct I can’t beleive a blog exsits for this # glad I know!!! my dad also got the call but I hung up!!

its a private connection via voip(voice over internet)so how the hell can they dial that??
ii got 3 calls to my cell one to my secondary cell number, it varies which phone number they call with either 1-305-675-6263 (called me three times)or this number 1-214-279-0990 neither of my phone providers had ever heard of anything like this, i was put on hold for over 1/2 hour waiting for a manager so i never did complain to them, i was able to block ld calls from my phone hope that works

Yeah, 3 of us from Guelph, ON. All cell phones. Our phones are registered to Hespler & Guelph. Bell & Telus. Smelt the scam when I saw the number. None of us answered.
I found the number in my missed calls directory on my Bell Mobile phone this morning at 11:21am. Thankfully i use long distance phone cards when i called the number back.

i just got a call on my cell from 214-279-0990. i picked up but i didnt press 9 i just hung up and called police and they told me no worries.. this call was all over the news and radio and now that i got it im told not to worry .. does anyone know if im going to be billed or if they have some way to get my cell info?
This number is my new favorite number to call, 2412790990 if you have a free long distance plan at some times of the day make a night of it and call them 100 times, its really fun, plus they can’t call out while you’re pissing them off just as much as they pissed you off, put your feet up and have a beer too.

Well i just got a call from these donkeys on my unlisted cell fone AGAIN!( 3 times now in the last two months) I think its a damn shame that nobody is doing anything about this situation. Everyone knows this is a scam and has been ongoing for a while now. They can catch Martha Stewart and toss her in prison , how can this idiot get away with doing this for so long!
Just got hit on my unlisted cell phone for the first time by 214-279-0990. Can the wireless service providers not stop mass-phone “spams” / scams? “If you [press 9], others will be able to make long-distance calls from your telephone line and charges will be forwarded to your bill.” How can we not be protected from such a simple operation by phone manufacturers/service providers nowadays?
This guy is going to get it. They called my elderly mother who rushed to the phone. She tripped and fell and broke her leg. Now somebody is going to pay. Texas here I come! If the phone company down there won’t do anything or tell me where to find these scoundrals I assure you it will be on the news.

I got the call today @ 5:00 - just as I was leaving work. It was the Texas number, 21–279-0990.
I answered, heard nothing and huyng up. I didn’t even think it could be a scam till I got home and looked up the phone number and found this site.
I’ve warned most people I know and I certainly hope these morons will be stopped.

I just got a call from this number 214-279-0990 and decided to look it up cuz i didnt know the area code..its a texas area code but I couldnt find anything on who had the number until i just decided to put only that in good and I got this blog. I didnt pick it up, its on my cell and im at work and was wondering who was calling me on my cell at this time. I was tempted to answer cuz it was a weird area code but decided against it..thank god…people are just pathetic to do things like this. Hopefully i dont receive this call again

The bigger problem is getting the trunk lines blocked at phone companies.
So, get hold of Phonebusters (see post) and if you are still ticked, call your phone company directly.
There seem to be the two numbers jamming the systems. the 305 and the 214. Good luck!

Just got a call this morning at about 9:30 from 214-279-0990. I didint answer it. Had no clue what or who it was so i entered the number in google and found this. Thanks now I know what to do when these losers call again.

Hi, I’m in Toronto and received the call today from 214-279-0990. I’ve called Bell Canada and reported the issue to the security department.
They informed me that they are aware of the situation and number and that anyone under Bell Canada is protected through encryption even if you have pushed buttons during the call.
According to Bell, there is another number circulating from a small island with the area code (670) that barks like a dog. (????)
IMO, just to be on the safe side, if you get any calls that instruct you to enter numbers of digits just hang up.

come to think of it, since people are getting calls on unlisted numbers and my home line is not under my name, it seems more likely that it’s a computer program that is able to call all 416 numbers within a small time span disregarding numbers that aren’t phone numbers making it seem like someone knows your cell and home number. that would make it a pretty huge scam since they would be calling everyone in a certain area.
I just got the call too. I was putting up a bookshelf and ran to answer the phone, and wouldn’t you know it, the whole shelf came crashing down with all the books falling on top of me. Now I have a huge bump on my head. Uuuhhh, the guys are going to get it.
In Toronto also. Just got a blank message from these guys (214 279 0990). Bastards got me out of bed at 11:30 on a saturday morning. Bastards.
Seems that they never sleep in Texas. I also received the early morning call from 214-279-0990. If it’s not one thing it’s another…god I hope the cops will figure something out sooner rather than later.
