An agenda of fear - code words - conspiracy.
Tolerance - diversity -
They are the words in a war.
The American Family Foundation says that the following characters are being used.

The nation’s children will be all too familiar with the characters on the video, incuding those from Arthur, Barney, Blue’s Clues, Bob the Builder, The Book of Pooh, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dora the Explorer, Jimmy Neutron, Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Little Mermaid, Madeline, The Magic School Bus, The Muppet Show, Rugrats, Sesame Street and SpongeBob Squarepants.

They are on a DVD and they are indoctrinating your children to accept a homosexual agenda.
Even James Dobson says so, so it simply must be true. He spoke out against a video going to schools that will promote the Southern Law Centre Tolerance Pledge and it’s a plot, a classic bait and switch. Dobson believes the DVD isn’t about multiculuralism and 9/11, it is about sexual identity. This is the insidious ‘bait and switch’.
It appears Dobson and the AFA are mixing up the song “We are Family” with a webpage “WeAreFamily” that supports gay and lesbian youth.
What is sad is that anyone would swallow this, but they are.
Dobson and the America Family Foundation are involved in a flat out lie.
Period.
And there are a lot of gullible people out there that will believe them.
There is some kind of bizarre ongoing fear replacing sanity here.
This is right up there with Jerry Falwell and the Teletubbies.

No Bob, say it ain’t so.

Update: Jared of The Thinklings thinks the wearefamily websites aren’t being mixed up by Focus on the Family or the American Family Foundation.
Fair enough.
The pledge that is going to schools with the video is the key objection.
It is a serious matter to call someone a liar. I’m not prepared to take that down yet, for in stating their objections are a lie, I can understand they fully believe they are correct.

Update: As I understand it, here it the pledge from the We Are Family site:

Tolerance is a personal decision that comes from a belief that every person is a treasure. I believe that America’s diversity is its strength. I also recognize that ignorance, insensitivity and bigotry can turn that diversity into a source of prejudice and discrimination.

To help keep diversity a wellspring of strength and make America a better place for all, I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics are different from my own.

Here is the article where the maker of the video asks if the mistake in wearefamily sites is taking place.

Here is the teachers guide for personal or instructional use.

Oh my gracious. I had read bits and pieces of this story today, but I hadn’t realized the full extent of the scariness. How anti-family can The Magic School Bus be, anyway?

Oh, right, it involves the public school system, bastion of liberal indoctrination.

I just can’t imagine living my faith in such an angry fashion. I think my soul would just shrivel up from the bitterness, like my tongue retracts from a lemon slice.

I’ll preface by saying I think Dobson and Co. are being silly, too. But only because they seem to be focusing on the cartoon characters for some reason. Reminds me of the Falwell/Teletubby fiasco.

    But a minor correction:
The main beef these folks are having is that the “We Are Family” program sent to schools is accompanied by a tolerance pledge for kids to learn and recite. In that pledge is a clause about respecting different “sexual identities.” Whatever you think about such an idea, it is understandable, to me at least, that the Focus contingent might not want their kids to be pledging to do things antithetical to their particular family’s values.

I don’t think there is confusion between the video and that organization you mentioned, but I could be wrong. I hadn’t heard that yet. I think it’s because of the tolerance pledge that is part of the video program.

    I could be wrong to.
The American Family Foundation and Focus on the Family is objecting to the literature that will be sent to schools with the tolerance pledge, correct?
The Anti-Defamation League helped designed the manual that is going to teachers. Part of the objection is the ADL promotes a homosexual agenda.

I forgot to add the link to the American Family Foundation. I’ve added it. And I added the video is going to schools with the teaching material.

I added the link to the site promoting material sent to the schools from the Southern Poverty Law Center. They deal with race, gender, immigration. religion, intergenerational, health, and sexual identity.

They are throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater Jared.

I need to look around and see if the original premise of mixing up the WeAreFamily organizations stands. I’ll correct with an update if I’m wrong. Thanks for your help on this.

The more I read about this, the more ridiculous it looks. One site I read claimed that no material with the pledge is being sent to schools; it simply appears on the WAF website as an available resource.

My main objection is on two fronts:
    a) That Dobson and co. are overreacting, creating backlash to things that aren’t happening, and thereby compromising their own credibility and making evangelicals look like knee-jerk morons.
    b) That the anti-Dobson folks think objecting to school kids pledging to respect different sexual identities means Dobson and co. (and evangelicals) are homophobic bigots.

You and I probably disagree on the “politics of homosexuality,” but I sympathize with the concerns for what values our kids are being taught in schools. Heck, I thought it was the family’s job to teach values. When the schools get involved, they’re likely to infringe on someone’s ideology. That it’s usually conservative Christians’ ideology seems not to matter much to “the powers that be.”

But I’m trying to maintain an informed, as-neutral-as-can-be middle position here. I don’t like the idea of kids even pondering the notion of different “sexual identities,” much less pledging to respect them. But if that’s not even happening, Dobson needs to get his facts straight.
Falwell/Robertson/et. al. don’t need any help making evangelicals look stupid.

Church Marketing Sucks made a few valid points.

Don’t spar with a fictional character - you are arguing with something that doesn’t exist.
They are not real, and exist in a place that defies time - like trying to outswim Flipper.
    Bad idea.
We like fictional characters because they aren’t real. Attempting reason and politics against them doesn’t work. In other words, don’t spar with a sponge.

I think attacking the video is foolish, I think seeing the intent of the company that made it, makes the reaction even more foolish.

I have great respect for anyone who parents, it is by far the most important job you’ll ever have. To love and teach a child, to bring them safely through the developmental stages of their lives is a profound task. To teach them to think, discern, chose and to find their place in the larger world is a immensely important.

Where we might diverge in our belief is in seeing ‘a culture war.’ Of course when a child steps out your door, they will face different ideology. Starts at least at pre-school and never stops. I freely admit I don’t understand the fear of…where parents burdened and frightened and tired and stressed, see life as a seige on their souls and the souls of their children.

I think you might be responding to things I haven’t suggested.
I don’t have problems with my kids learning about different ideologies, etc. Just not when they’re in elementary school. I don’t think my elementary aged children need to know about sexual identities. That’s just me. And millions of other parents.

I agree with you that attacking SpongeBob is stupid. My daughters and I are big fans of the yellow one.
I also think that if all kids are seeing is a bunch of cartoon characters singing “We Are Family,” this whole Dobson/AFA campaign is ludicrous.

Thanks for clarifying, I was thinking out loud; tricky ground for a none-parent.:^)
    I over-responded.

First, I haven’t seen much of this “controversy” and indeed hadn’t heard of it since I have restricted my news intake to major events found on various news organizations websites. I personally think the whole thing is silly. If I take Dobson’s statement in the way he says he meant it, then I wholeheartedly agree. GRADE SCHOOL IS NOT THE PLACE FOR INDOCRTRONATION OF SEXUAL PREFERENCE. I don’t care if you’re teaching kids to e heterosexual, homosexual, or asexual. Children at all levels of education in this country are behind their peers in the basic fundamentals they will need to succeed in life, they don’t need one second of precious learning time interruped to teach them how to deal with someone who may feel a different way about religion, sex, or whatever. They need to learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Children should be taught right from wrong by their parents, based on the beliefs in their family, not by any outside force, even if it is a teacher. What part of getting a bachelor’s degree in education qualified you to teach my kids what they should believe? Teach them how to read and write and leave it at that. This is part of why our country is lagging behind other parts of the world, particularily Asia, I believe, in producing quality engineers and scientists. Personally, I was not a big fan of chemistry in high school in 1991, but I know now and knew then that it was a lot more important for me to be well-rounded in math and science at age 15 than for me to be well-rounded in tolerence. At that age, I’d gotten enough from my family (and common sense, something else that is not encouraged in teaching young children) to make up my own mind about how I felt about people with a different sexual orientation that I have. I now have several friends who are gay or bisexual and you know what? They all seem to be as happy in their sexuality as I am for them to be happy in it. I don’t care what they do with whom and they don’t care or need approval from me or society to feel the way they do. Perhaps this happiness comes from making the decision on their own instead of having it forced upon them constantly when they were really too young to know the social, psychological, and even physiological ramifications of sex in the first place. Talk about it in health class.. in about the 7th grade or so.. in a very clinical manner.. then DROP IT. Let adolescents have any further discussions about how they feel with the people they should be having them with - their parents. This will free teachers to focus on what they should be teaching… and maybe we can get that one survey percentage to rise.. you know the one a few years ago.. where a majority of school children couldn’t identify the capital of the country they live in.
