Weird Day

I started today as I usually do, slowly.
I’m don’t wake up well.:^)

Got the coffee, sat down at the computer to delete spam and opened (in mailwasher) what appeared to be a legitimate email from the BBC.

All the bells and whistles went off, it was Netsky, a computer virus that is currently labelled ‘medium.’ I got snookered.

Okay. Took care of that.
Looked at an email from a family member saying they were getting a 1-888 call looking for me. We checked it out, my family member called the number back and was met with much rudeness and un-co-operation.
So they phoned Phonebusters and I emailed Phonebusters with the info.

Finally, between another phone call and a concerted Google search, we came up with this company that says it’s a collection agency. I don’t owe money to anyone, but somebody must think I do. Given how they are behaving, I’m not sure they are a collection agency and if they are, tough. They can’t ruin a credit rating of someone who doesn’t use credit.
I’m not that hard to find and I don’t need the hassle of a non-issue.

I suspect it’s an ongoing computer glitch from a cable company. I’ve dealt with one of their supervisors on more than one occasion and both the bank and I submitted all the cease and desist type paperwork and blocked the company. The bank was fed up, I was fed up and I am not responsible for company incompetence. It’s been over a year.

Then I get a computer generated unsigned snail mail letter saying the province has cut off disability. It relates back to a hearing several months ago. So I phoned the 800 number and it took over 1/2 hour to get through voice mail jail. Didn’t matter, getting a number to deal with someone in the region led to about another 1/2 hour of more voice mail jail.
So I went to the office.
They said everything was fine, it was an error on their part and it was fixed.
Right. I don’t believe them, but I’m not going to break a sweat over it either.

We rely too much on computers in this society. The government is months behind, a cable company billing department is so messed up they fire things off to collection agencies, who can’t find me in a phone book and harrass family members.
Give me a break.

The coffee was excellent, the spam is deleted, I don’t think PhoneBusters will tell me anything I don’t already know.
We aren’t going to stop trusting numbers we see on the screen.
It’s very hard to get hold of real people in government and businesses to deal with their mistakes.
Trust doesn’t exist much anymore when the computer screen in a cube farm says otherwise.

Man, grrrrr. I’m going for a walk. While writing this, PhoneBusters got back to me (thank you!) and a telemarketer called. I interrupted them long enough to say “No, take me off the list now thank you, bye-bye.”

  1. Amen to that. Computers are handy, but they can sure be a big hassle.

Yesterday I could barely post because my blog’s host server was inundated by comment spam. Yuck. Of course it happened on the day when I had big plans to post lots of interesting stuff.
My medical office is planning to go paperless and I am sure that it will happen in a half-donkeyed manner.

I hate not being able to get into my blog at will too.

If your office is going paperless, don’t let them know you have such good computer skills, or you’ll be troubleshooting instead of getting your work done.:^o

Though we use them, we sure do hate our computers at times, don’t we? I often threaten mine with a hammer. :)

  5. Bene D says:

With all the tools you have at your disposal, haven’t you thought of more than a hammer? I’ve no doubt you could find creative ways to destroy a cranky computer:^)

  6. Tom Reindl says:

Well, I could try an elaborate, yet easily escapable death trap for the computer, tying it to a board, and passing it repeatedly through my wood planer, but that might be too Batman-ish.

Yeah, there are lots of ways to destroy these buggers. The thing is, you want to destroy it, AND take your frustrations out as well. A hammer is the ultimate stress removal tool.

I always say, there’s nothing that can’t be “fixed” with a hammer.

Oh man….don’t get me started! I couldn’t agree more with your computer over dependance statement. It seems like you can’t talk get a real human being on the phone any more! Recently I noticed some problems on my credit card statement. So I went through the incredible pain to try to get ahold of someone with a pulse. It was nearly impossible.

Well, glad things worked out for you, Bene!
