Quiet staid New Zealand has a radical church raising cain, run by a charasmatic leader named Brian Tamaki. He and his followers have a political agenda and often protest, with jackbooted young people dressed in black.
Tamaki gathered about 15 thousand followers and marched in Auckland supposedly for family values, his political aspirations for his church are well known with Tamaki predicting/prophecying Destiny will rule New Zealand in four years.
The church has a troubled history with 12 branches in New Zealand and one in Australia. Tamaki encourages confrontration.

Hey Bene, I don’t often comment on religious topics, but this one scares the heck out of me.
I guess its why I’ve fallen out of supporting a “church organization” - someone somewhere makes a decision regarding my funding - and I’m not sure its where I want my money going.
I guess I’ve lost faith in those who run / direct / control “organized” religion.
Don’t get me wrong, I support many organizations through donations of time and or money, but the decision where it goes is up to me.
’nuff said.
This one scares me too Hamster - dressing politics up in religion is scary stuff.
Unfortunately, it happens all the time. But it scares me all the same.
Yes, Hamster, this is why I have fallen out of supporting nations - because they sometimes create holocausts.
As well, I’ve also decided to longer support marriage - because some women, sometimes, exhibit infidelity.
Nothing like baby and bathwater reactions
Hi Bene,
Destiny is a concern here in NZ. They don’t wear jackboots though. They wore black t-shirts on one march they held - and it was controversial. Personally I didn’t see the need for wearing black t-shirts - but then I didn’t see the need for the protest either. Destiny has been going for many years, long before they added a political component. The Destiny Party is a sort of offshoot from their church. Of course there is a big overlap. However many Christians here are supportive of the United Future Party - which is currently a coalition partner in government. There are several Christians in United Future and they conduct themselves sensibly and work hard. I didn’t actually vote for them last time but lot’s of Christians did and probably will do so again this year when we have our elections. Unfortunately marching down a street one day in black t-shirts is a media must-get and the media love to focus on Brian Tamaki. And he loves to use the media. But in the overall picture he is not representative of most Christians here I think. I’ve watched some of his tv shows and his exegesis is - well, it could use some work.
