An Alberta Conservative MP is causing outrage because of a post he put on his blog.
Monte Solberg’s blogging even got a response from the Prime Minister’s office.
The story of his provocative post is in the Montreal Gazette, his blog is here.
Solberg has been in Parliament since 1993.
Blogs Canada has a post up on why politicans shouldn’t blog.
Monte Solberg should not be blogging. Not only does he utterly fail at this feeble attempt at humour, he does discredit to himself and his party. I would say his post was ill-advised but I cannot imagine it being published had there been any advice, at all.
My own advice to politicians thinking about using a blog has been consistent. Get an official blogger. If the official blogger writes something as outlandish as this, the candidate or incumbent can fire the fool and distance himself from the article. Solberg does not have that option. The Conservative Party of Canada can, however, oust Solberg and distance themselves from his ignorance. Will they?
I disagree. I think politicans should blog if they want attention. I think all the rantings, thoughts, bias and temperment that makes a person and shapes a politican is a good thing to have out there for the rest of us to read - unedited, unfiltered and uncensored.
The opposition is going to go after anything that is put up, but really, do most Canadians care?
We have surprisingly short memories, and this is more about party issues which any MP worth his salt has to take into consideration. If Solberg was in his first term, this could be chalked up to inexperience. But he isn’t. He has been Reform, Alliance and now Conservative. 12 years in federal politics.
To me it’s a glimpse of how fractured the Conservative party is. Given the regional divisions in Canada, let alone economic, geographical and language, his rant is a tiny daily slice of how far the opposition has to go to be a contender.
I’d rather see a politican fall flat on their face themself without media context, which is what this dust up is about.
