The Indonesian government is starting a massive vaccination campaign that will go house to house to vaccinate 5 million children by July.
Nigerian clerics began the hard line none vacination decision in August of 2003, claiming the vacinations were attempts by the US government to spread AIDS or render Nigerians infertile. The boycott ended in July 2004 after 752 Nigerians came down with polio.
Other countries are also being affected - Benin, Chad, Cameroon, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ethopia, Central African Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Sudan, Mali, Togo and Yemen.
When WHO began a world wide immunization effort in 1988, over 350 thousand people a year contacted polio - a water born disease that attacks the nervous system.
Last year just under 2 thousand people world wide were diagnosed with polio.
