I wonder if anyone is live blogging what is occuring in Parliament?

Odd to see all the MP’s present. Bill C-43 has passed.

Now the vote begins for part 2 Bill C-48.
Wow. Chuck Cadman stood for yea.
It’s in the speakers chair.
Wow. The Liberal’s win the confidence vote.

This is the 38th Parliament.
A non-confidence vote has never gone to the speaker. The speaker votes to send the bill to committee - keep it alive. 153-152.

One vote changed changed everything.

Update: I know this isn’t commentary, it’s anyone’s guess how long this will be in committee. I watched history. As messy, discouraging and as frustrating and as wrong as democracy can be, the course is set.
Will we have a functioning house? Will there be more civility?

I don’t know. But I do know I watched history. I understand this is what people died for. There will be lots of commentary and reflection and drama in the days ahead.

Who is Chuck Cadman?

I’ve never met Surrey, B.C. MP Chuck Cadman. But I’ve met people in his shoes. People whose loved ones were murdered in some senseless act.

People who’ve watched the justice system mete out soft sentences to the violent criminals who turned their lives upside down.

People left shaking their heads in bewilderment at how Canada — a modern, civilized country — could put such little stock in the lives of victims of violent crimes.

People who have discovered in horror that our federal government has passed legislation in recent years that allows violent criminals — some of them murderers — to serve their “sentences” at home.

People who cannot believe the federal government would reduce maximum sentences for young offenders and make it even more difficult to jail youth who commit violent acts.

People yearning for a reasonable, common-sense justice system.

Cadman’s son Jesse, then 16, was murdered in 1992.

He was jumped by a group of thugs and stabbed by a teen who was out on probation and not legally allowed out of the house at the time.

It’s the reason Cadman got into politics.

I really don’t know who won tonight. Depends on how the next few months play out. It’s only going to get more interesting.

    For sure.
It’s odd to know that right or wrong, we’ve watched Canadian history happen.

I listened to both of the votes on CBC Radio 1… and couldn’t believe how tense I got as I waited.

I appreciated Speaker Peter Milliken’s explanation of his reasoning for voting “Yea”.

It’s going to be an interesting rest of the session.

    I forgot to breathe.:^)

It was as tense as any international-down-to-the- wire-hockey-game-Canada-is-playing-tense.

I really liked your post. It must seem like you are spitting into the wind.

We may have gone into a 9 month plus election cycle.

Decorum and civility are name only, tossed about for voice clips. I don’t know why the honourable members don’t understand how important it is.

I also watched Her Majesty and Prince Phillip at the RCMP memorial today. Civility. Decorum. Respect.
It’s been quite a day for this country.
I doubt we’ll be seeing Queen Elizabeth II on this soil again. At least some behaved themselves with deference to others.

I was working in the backyard, listening on the radio, when Shannon called me in for supper. It was just at the introduction of the second vote… so the three of us sat around the table - waiting. (Actually, two of us waited - the third isn’t interested in politics… yet. :) )

You got it smack on with, “It was as tense as any international-down-to-the- wire-hockey-game-Canada-is-playing-tense.”

So… it staves off the election call.
Now - I wonder if our elected representatives will actually *govern*, rather than keep up the senseless battleposes?

    Here’s hoping!
