The capital of Afghanistan is facing a serious and spreading cholera outbreak.
Kabul has seen 8 deaths, with over 2 thousand cases reported.
The Kabul government says there are only 300 cases are everything is under control.The city has a population of 4 million.
USAID says the city is on the verge of an epidemic.
The disease is spread mainly through contaminated food or water. The bacterium attacks the intestine and causes severe diarrhea and dehydration.
The Kabul Ministry says wells have been clorinated, campaigns launched to educate people to boil drinking water, washing foods and hands.
It is an acute bacterial intestinal infection with a short incubation period. Diarrhora, dehydration and sometimes vomiting occurs.
In unprepared communities death rates run about 50%. Depending on the time taken to get to treatment oral dehydations salts are given. In more serious cares intravenous treatment and in certain cases antibiotics are required.
The Cholera baterium is mutating is several areas of the world.
