Why is the promotion about War of the Worlds all about Tom Cruise?

I saw a reasonable question at another blog today.

Why isn’t the media asking hard questions about Cruise’s statements about/around Scientology?

Because Scientology is the most litigious cult/religion/business/group most people/countries have ever run across. It’s about a policy called ‘fair game.’

Scientology is classified as a religion in the US.
Germany, France and other countries have chosen not to classify the group as a religion.

Every time I hear Tom Cruise talk about his religion, I less want to see his movies. He doesn’t seem as likeable.

Tom Cruise is an aging star, who isn’t going there with dignity.
He is having to work harder to be his former action hero self. He is also showing us how much he is in love with his image - and the to-be trophy wife looks exactly like what it is.
He’s just another middle aged Hollywood person that needs to grow up.

Shame. If it is his job as star to promote the movie, he is doing an unbelievably crummy job of it.

Creepy is the word that leaps to mind.

What a shame that his latest wife is being sucked into the creepiness with him. It’s interesting that he joined Scientology when he was married Mimi Rogers (an older woman who was a member) and now he’s marrying a younger woman and bringing her into the “church”. Is this a celebrity recruitment pattern?

    *shudders*

    Creepy, creepy, creepy.

I don’t see his involvement as creepy so much as sad, and you are correct, I think Mimi Rogers did have a part in his recruitment.

Holmes has added a new best friend to her entourage - a scientology handler/advisor.
At least enough information is available now that most people can make informed choices.

…”The Church of Scientology uses celebrity spokesmen to endorse L. Ron Hubbard’s teachings and give Scientology greater acceptability in mainstream America.
As far back as 1955, Hubbard recognized the value of famous people to his fledgling, off-beat church when he inaugurated ‘Project Celebrity.’ According to Hubbard, Scientologists should target prominent individuals as their “quarry” and bring them back like trophies for Scientology.
…Celebrities are considered so important to the movement’s expansion that the church created a special office to guide their careers and ensure their ‘correct utilization’ for Scientology.
The church has a special branch that ministers to prominent individuals, providing them with first-class treatment. Its headquarters, called Celebrity Centre International, is housed in a magnificent old turreted mansion on Franklin Avenue, overlooking the Hollywood Freeway.

The movie is getting love it-hate it reviews.
Even the Variety rave isn’t kind to Cruise, the review focuses on Spielburg and his work except for this:

…But he also seems to be on uppers, as Cruise is in overdrive virtually throughout. It’s easy to see why Spielberg wanted the commercial cushion of an above-the-title superstar, but this is no more a performance-based picture than “Jurassic Park,” and might have proven more balanced and artistically effective with a no-name cast.

Several years back there were a significant number of media stories about Scientology. Of course, they are so secretive that stories must usually rely on ex-Scientologists, who often feel their lives are in danger for speaking out.

Another reason that stories may have faded are because there have been indications that Scientology is now on the decline. That may be one reason they are psuhing Cruise to a higher profile.

I like Cruise as an actor. But apart from the fact that I am a Christian, or maybe conversely because I am one, the more I hear from him on the topic the more unfavorable my view becomes of the cult.

Scientology has a pretty whacked following. Check it out. I can in contact with a group of individual from this cult some time ago. The founder is a science fiction writer. Need we say more? More can be said, just do some research and you will see why Tom Cruise is so violent. Mess around and bad mouth them too much and you will have some degree of aggression placed on you. Maybe Tom Cruise will start to call and attack you personally.

I grew up watching and loving Tom Cruise and his movies, but I seem to like him less and less these days, even to the point where I have no desire to see War of the Worlds because he is in it. As a psychology major, Tom’s comments disturb me. Anti-depressants have helped many people if taken correctly and accompanied with therapy. Tom is no expert on depression and should not be haphazardly giving advise on such a topic. His comments could be dangerous to many women and men who have sought or are thinking about seeking medical care for depression.

I was listening to a report about Tom Cruise on network TV this morning. As they named the movies he’s been in, I realized that out of all of them, I only liked him in maybe two. Why did I think I used to like him? No doubt he has an appealing smile. His latest desperate attempts at reviving his aging popularity reveal a darker side. I think Tom is showing real signs of a bi-polar high. Maybe THIS is why he is so opposed to psychiatry. Antidepressents, seratonin reuptake inhibitors etc. save families, sanity and lives. How dare he use his celebrity status to promote his misguided ideology. No more Tom Cruise movies for me until HE gets some help.

Now that Tom is the $cientology spokesperson and expert on childbirth, postpartum conditions and mental health, I would like to know one thing:

Last week, my sister (who is a correctional officer at the county jail) had an inmate who claimed to have 5 alien spirits that had possessed him. As a result, the police decided to 5150 him and send him to a mental institution. Why hasn’t someone done this to Tom?
