It is Canada Day.
The country is 138 years old.

If you read commentary/opinion from Fox, or Link Byfield you’d think this was the worst place on the planet to live.

Rex Murphy (CBC commentator) said:

“It is an axiom of this world that the worst things happen in the poorest places to people in the weakest circumstances. If you were born in the West, you’ve won the only lottery that really counts from the very first moment you take air.”

Canadians - What things you are proud of about this country?
What do you typically do on this very national holiday?

And if you are not from Canada, what do you appreciate about our country?

I appreciate the sacrifices made by generations that have come before me.
I appreciate distinct cultures forming a country, I appreciate the men and women who laid aside their wants to defend our way of life.
I appreciate a whole day to kick back and spend family time.

I appreciate our sense of humour - we still have the ability to poke fun at ourselves without being to mean spirited about it.
I appreciate the fact that although we fall short of our ideals, we haven’t stopped working toward them.

We’ve been through a contentious year with a minority government.
As we have before, and as we will again. It is the people of this country that holds it together. And I think that is worth celebrating.

How about you?

“It is the people of this country that holds it together.”

That, my friend, is what I celebrate about “The True North, Strong and Free”.

Blessings and peace to you - and everyone else reading - on Canada’s celebration day.

I did not really know what a Canadian was until I travelled.
Like many things that are defined by the absence
    of positive properties……
    darkness, the absence of light,
    evil, absence of good….
for all the things wrong with Canada,
    the good things are great.
    Be thankful

Canada is a beautiful country; its strength is its diversity, and despite our challenges and disagreements, it is still the “true north strong and free.”

    Vive le Canada!

As Kevin said, Canada is beautiful. Not only the scenery, but the people. From Victoria to Jasper to Edmonton to Toronto to Québec City [I haven't got farther east...yet!] I have been welcomed and treated wonderfully by all.

Your maple syrup is to die for.

You can laugh at yourself. And love to do so.

The people and government seem to have a conscience; the govt conscience sadly lacking in many countries [mine included...Oz].

The Canadians I have met in my travels have been gentle and kind people. Living in Michigan for over 20 years, I have visited many times. Toronto is a great city. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is an outstanding theater experience. And your side of Niagara Falls is WAY better than the U.S. side. Your money is cooler too — I love the way it depicts Canadian wildlife.

I visited Canada for 2 weeks in August 1992. I was part of the first ever Canadian Bike for Bibles ride.

We took a week to cycle from Revelstoke to Golden.

I only wish I had the money to fly the family to Canada for a few months to have a really good look around. It’s a magnificent place.

Canada Day is about being Canadian; celebrating the unique and multi-cultural nature of our country. It’s about embracing the differences from which we draw our strengths. Being Canadian is not about ‘being better than anyone else’ - it’s about “com’on over for a beer, stay for dinner and meet the familly. You’re always welcome.”

It’s about acceptance. Inclusion. Good common values.

Yeah we get a lot of flack from some in the US, but consider this. The don’t necessarily represent the views of every american. And everytime ‘FOX NEWS” goes on it’s anti-Canadian stance, remember this: You only have to tell the truth once. Lies - you gotta keep saying them over and over.
