The Daily Mail is reporting that police shot and killed a suspected suicide bomber at the Stockwell Underground station about an hour ago.

The Times is reporting the man shot by police was one of the men who escaped yesterday.

Scotland Yard said: “We can confirm that just after 10am today armed officers shot a male at Stockwell Underground station.”

Witness Mark Whitby, speaking to BBC News 24, reported the man was shot five times at close range after he had jumped on a train.

The train was standing in the station with its doors open when the Asian man ran on, pursued by three plainclothes officers.

He tripped and was also pushed to the floor and one of the officers shot him five times. Mr Whitby said the Asian man was dead.

3 million people use the London Underground daily, about 1/2 million are on trains at peak times.

The BBC is reporting the same.

The hunt has intensified for four men who escaped yesterday after the bombs they were carrying didn’t go off. Two men that were arrested yesterday have been released.

BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the devices were so similar there was speculation they could have been part of the same batch.

“The explosive might have degraded over time or had not been put together right in this case, or it could have been a completely different batch of explosives - homemade - that had not been cooked up properly.”

The bombers’ plan might have been disrupted by the investigation into the 7 July attacks, forcing them to act before they had been fully prepared, Corera added.

Police responded to a bomb threat at an east London mosque earlier today.
Since the bomb attacks 15 days ago, five mosques in London have been defaced or burned, muslim leaders reported over 70 verbal attacks.
London police say there has been an increase in racially and religiously-motivated hate crimes since the terror bombings, including one resulting in a serious injury.

The Abu Hafs al Masri Brigade has claimed responsibility for yesterday on their website. They also claimed responsibility for the July 7th attacks which killed 56 people.

The London Underground workers union is meeting with security officials and providing help for stressed workers, particularly train drivers. Police have set up witness booths at the stations involved yesterday, encouraging people to come forward. Yesterday, passengers tried to chase and catch at least one of the men.
Sniffer dogs are being used as security is stepped up.
