There is a chemical plant in the Wayne County suburban area of Detroit that exploded tonight.
A Ford plant has been evacuated along with residents within a half mile radius.
Others living near the explosions have been asked to stay put and close their door and windows.
It’s a massive fire, about a city block and it happened a couple of hours ago, even local Detroit stations have no idea if there are deaths or injuries.
The EQ Environmental Recovery plant in Romulus keeps exploding.
Blogging being what it is, the first person I thought of was Lee Ann Millinger and her family. I know Detroit is a huge city, but blogging does make the world smaller.
Update: And blogging being what it is, I headed over to Technorati. It’s already tagged posts on this explosion. Since I posted this, the evacuation area has spread to a mile.
Update1:00 am - Fire crews haven’t moved in, the logistics are massive, once they evacuate the neighbourhood there is no point in putting firefighters in harm’s way. It will take the night to burn itself out.
A plant worker told media that workers had time to evacuate, but didn’t have time to shut the tank cleaning process down. The plant processed about 2 million pounds of waste chemicals such as machine oil, gas, and different types of alcholol. The tanks were being cleaned with acetone.

Thanks for thinking of me, Bene. But I am quite far away from the site of the explosion. Yes, the Detroit area is sprawling, and I’m a good 30 miles or so away. The plant that exploded is in Romulus, in the southwestern part of the Detroit metro area. I live in Royal Oak, which is to the northeast of Detroit proper. I’m a good 30-45 minutes from the danger.
