The Ganges River has overflown, merging with another river, flooding about 20 villages and endangering more. About 20 thousand people have been affected in the immediate area.

Earlier this week, a leading water expert warned this would happen because of erosion. The Ganges breached an embankment and started flowing into the Pagla river.

It is not yet known if there have been deaths, an early statement says about 100 shops and an unknown of homes were washed away in West Bengal.

Flood and water experts say this will effect the Port of Calcutta, politicans dismiss the claims.
