This is rather funny.
I am so uninterested in the current election campaign. I think I’ve said that already. We vote on January 23rd, I’ll catch up on platforms and all the important things I should inform myself about as a voter after Christmas.

Meantime if I do mention the election, I’ll try to keep it light.
A liberal speech writer is travelling around with Paul Martin and he has a Blackberry and a blog. Scott Feschuk is quite taken with his new Blackberry but that’s another story.

Yesterday reporters were told by the Conservative War Room there was going to be a press conference on Parliament Hill - a react by Conservative Jason Kenney regarding an item on the Liberal Party website. Something to do with Omni and insulting multi-culturalism.

Okay.
The media showed up, their press conference was moved indoors - (blast this winter electioneering) and Kenney did his react.

Conservative MP Kenney stepped up to the podium and informed reporters about a disturbing thing the Conservatives discovered in a blog kept by Scott Fetchuk, a Martin speechwriter who is blogging while following the PM around the campaign trail.

Feschuk is a humorist who once edited the National Post’s very funny Post-Mortem page.

According to Kenney, Feschuk “exposed his true feelings for Canada’s cultural diversity by referring to Omni Television subscribers as ’socially awkward people who believe in UFOs’” in his blog.

Omni Television is a multicultural television channel based in Toronto.

“Omni subscribers represent the tremendous diversity of Canada’s ethnic communities and they would be rightfully concerned and insulted by these kinds of pejorative remarks coming from the prime minister’s own speech writer,” Kenney said.

My. My. That is news. Reporters rush to check the facts. Wasn’t hard. Feschuk had already responded on his blog.

“It wasn’t a joke, Jason,” Feschuk blogged. “I was being serious. Of course, I was referring to subscribers to Omni, the magazine for science buffs and those who believe they’ve visited Alpha Centuri, not viewers of Omni television.

“In the spirit of interstellar goodwill, I make this offer: if Jason apologizes, I’ll send him a free subscription to Omni and a tin foil hat.”

The Conservatives send out the Kenney media advisory (call to his press conference) three times. After it was over even. Right. Been there, done that, the media checked the blog. Oh. That Omni. Filed the story, moved on.  Then the Conservative press people sent out what they call a Reality Check that evening.

“Liberal War Room insults multicultural viewers.”

Sigh.
Note to Conservative Party War Room media people. Get a blackberry, a laptop and a blog. Conservative MP Monte Solberg has one (a blog that is) but he’s been kind of busy.
No sign of the Reality Check at The Official Conservative Party of Canada website. Check out the blogs!
