I spent a few minutes on IM today talking to a friend who just got back from Peru.
Things are dangerous there because of - sendero luminoso - The Shining Path - maoist insurgents.
He could not leave the house, his family has to have other family in the military escort them to something as simple as a bus stop. The church, four blocks away could not be attended, the priest has had to close it.

And I whine about Canadian elections.

My friend is safely back in Spain, aching for family he has to leave behind. Many of them make about 510 soles -100 dollars a month, barely enough for food, not enough for clothes.

And I complain about servers.

He grieves for his compadre - he is the god-father of the children. His compadre was shot three years ago, the bullets are still in him. I asked my friend why his compadre was shot. He said, “because it was Christmas.”

And I gripe about…

Lord, have mercy.

One Response to “South America”

It’s easy to forget the rest of the world while we are worrying about the things that most distract us.
No one I know in Australia is fearful of their life as a Christian, or cannot attend church for safety reasons.
Everyone I know has more than enough money to survive, but we all still want more.
I heard a statistic, that if every Christian in America tithed, (rather than the average of around 3%), there would be enough money freed for churches to put a huge dent in world hunger. Yet we’d prefer to renovate the house, buy a new car etc.

I hate it when I gripe about my own life. We do have it really easy.
