There are 1 thousand surface mines and 1 thousand below ground mines in the US, with about one hundred thousand miners. The US Bureau of Labor statistics say 27 coal miners died in 2002. According to the Labor statistics mining remains the at the top of the 10 most dangerous jobs in America.
Mining remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Six thousand died in coal mines in China in 2004.
The BBC also looks at the information from the command center at the West Virginia mine, how cellphone communications may have been picked up, misunderstood and spread and what questions need to be answered.
