Having lived in Nova Scotia, I know it’s a colloquialism, and intent would be interpreted differently elsewhere.
Since Peter McKay and Alexa McDonough are both borne and bred Maritimers, I don’t think this was intended as a sexist remark. Regional, yes, sexist, no.
Richard Bott of looking back…looking forward is looking for ‘christianize’ that bugs you. The term essentially means jargon that is borne out of relationships, in particular the sub-set languages of Christianity.

That “stick to your knitting” phrase is in my vocabulary for “stick with your specialty” or “don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong”; it wasn’t intended as sexist, but what is intended is never considered, especially if it’s someone on the left can take as sexist or racist.
I recall one Washington DC official got in trouble using the word “niggardly” to describe an inappropriately small responce to an issue. It has nothing to do with “the n word” but the usual suspects got upset anyway.
