The Bishop of Calgary sees Stephen Harper signing off his last few speeches with God Bless Canada as a prayer. I admire the Bishop’s largesse of heart, I remain skeptical. Lifesite  quotes Bishop F. Henry from Stephen Harper’s home riding:

Bishop Frederick Henry of the Calgary Diocese told LifeSiteNews today that he was “greatly encouraged by [Stephen Harper's] brief statement of prayer.”

“Too many of our politicians and public figures have been inclined to be almost apologetic for professing their religious belief in God and their values,” said Bishop Henry, who has been an outspoken defender of religious freedom in Canada. “Mr. Harper’s comment dove-tails perfectly with his call for government accountability and integrity, as ultimate accountability will be to God.”

This is a p.o.v. article, and I’m glad the Bishop is happy.
Funny though, I can’t remember who spoke at the Parliament Hill 9/11 memorial.
Don’t remember a word.
I remember the largest number of Canadians ever gathered on the hill for a vigil stood quietly in sympathy and grief for our neighbours.
I remember it was thrown together quickly for a government (September 14th) and the outpouring of the Canadian people bordered spontaneous.
I remember churches all over the country opened, services were held. I remember the people of the Maritimes opening their homes, their wallets and their hearts for as long as it took. I remember Canadian first responders and trained church and para-church groups sending off their best people without so much as a second shirt.

I remember Swiss Air Flt. 111. I was there.

Under the Liberal government, mention of Christ and Christian prayer has been forbidden at official government-sponsored ceremonies. At the massive memorial service for victims of September 2001’s terrorist attack on New York City, held on Parliament Hill, no prayer was permitted. Religious leaders, although present from many different faiths and denominations, were not acknowledged nor asked to participate in the ceremony.

The same was true for the memorial service held for the victims of Swissair flight 111, which crashed off Peggy’s Cove in 1998. Church leaders were prevented from mentioning Jesus Christ or offering Christian prayers in the official service held for the victims’ families.

Bishop Henry sir, so what?
So what if a federal government doesn’t mention God to your satisfaction in official ceremonies? It is a government of over 100 languages and 31 million people. The politicians and bureaucrats are pluralists, it is their job and desire to be as  accommodating as circumstances permit.  It is God’s to hear our hearts.

It is God to hear our hearts but many times in the Bible it was a collective statement indirectly “God Bless us” that showed the framework of the standard. There is something to be said for leaders to mention who they get their strength from. Not mentioning it seems selfish.
