Apparently in April 2005 in the Indiana State Legislature:
On April 5, 2005, Reverend Clarence Brown delivered the invocation.2 The
prayer included the thanks: “Father we are so gracious [sic - grateful?] to You for Your grace and mercy that You have allowed us to be able to have and Father I thank You for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who died that we might have the right to come together in love. Father, let us love one another as he has loved us.” The prayer concluded: “I thank You in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.” After the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, Speaker Bosma reintroduced Reverend Brown, saying: “I understand he has a wonderful voice and he is going to bless us with a song.” Reverend Brown proceeded to sing “Just a Little Talk with Jesus.” A number of the legislators, staff, and visitors present in the chamber stood, clapped, and sang along at the invitation of Reverend Brown. This event prompted at least some members of the House to walk out…
It didn’t end there. The Speaker continued to take out his left foot and insert his right foot to the point he made the Washington Post. After meeting with a Jewish delegation in Indiana a writer had this to say:
Speaker Bosma, defending the prayer issue, asked, “How many Jews are there in Indiana? About 2%? There are at least 80% Christians in Indiana.”
The implication of this statement was that our minority community doesn’t and shouldn’t have any say or any voice. It is about the majority and what the majority wants. The jaws of the delegation dropped to the floor. We were speechless. Everything we believed about this country had just been trampled. Gone was the belief of the constitutional protection of minorities. Gone was not feeling marginalized. Gone was the belief we were not strangers in this country.
The issue continues:
Published 2 years, 7 months agoMike Sodrel (R-IN) has proposed a bill that would remove federal jurisdiction over the content of prayers performed in State legislatures. This way, when the Republican leadership of the Indiana General Assembly open their session with a prayer that explicitly invokes Christ, they will not be held in contempt of court for violating a 2005 order barring them from doing so.
