Angry Christians aren’t a rare sight anywhere. You can be sure that more than a few of the faces smiling back at you on Sunday morning are angry about something, and some were venting that anger on the way to church. Christian spouses and families get angry with one another. Christian teenagers are angry at their parents. Christian men are angry at dozens of things, from money to morality to mistreatment to mortality. Church leaders are angry at church members and vice versa. There are a thousand reasons to be mad and multiplied thousands of angry Christians everywhere.

We seldom see our anger as a “problem.” If someone suggested we go to an anger management class, we’d be about as excited as Adam Sandler. Anger must be among the most excused of behaviors among Christians. If Christians kept account of other people’s sins the way we do our own anger, our reputation for being liberal would be considerably different.

Now to the unchurched and people of other faiths – evangelical is increasingly shorthand for: right-wing US politics, an arrogant loud mouth who refuses to listen to other people’s opinions, men in grey suits who attempt to crowbar authorised version scripture verses into every situation, or ‘happy-clappy’ simpletons who gullibly swallow whatever their tub thumping minister tells them to believe. Large parts of the British media seem happy to paint evangelicals into that stereotype. Today in the UK ‘evangelical’ is often linked with the ultimate 21^st century swearword ‘fundamentalist’. The result is the name ‘evangelical’ which years ago, may have smelt of roses – now has the aroma of the manure that fertilises the bush.
