MP Garth Turner got caught in an ambush interview (panel discussion) at CHCH TV in Hamilton with a religious right fundamentalist.
Turner had been told he’d be discussing a certain topic and wound up face to face with Defend Marriage Canada’s Charles McVety, also of the Christian College of Toronto (Charismatic Pentecostal - blab it and grab it) The Canadian Family Action Coalition and Christian Coalition International.
We hear about religious right extreme groups from the US all the time. These are a few of ours. Turner is stuck in the studio:
So, McVety immediately started to spout off about the liberal and amoral media in Canada, and how they are promoting – through many MPs – an agenda of hate and discrimination and godlessness. He spoke openly of the goal of faith-based groups taking over nomination meetings and electing to Parliament people who subscribe to his moral view of the world. When I argued that an MP has to represent all of the people in an electoral district and that it’s wrong for any special interest group – religious or ethnic or cultural – to hijack a nomination, he thundered and thumped and I started to worry about lightening bolts in the studio.
I later heard his group, whatever it amounts to, is targeting the nominations of several sitting Tory MPs who voted in favour of gay marriage last time around. And, after this blog posting, the same crew might target me, shipping in busloads of pious people to swamp the hall, overrun the secular devils who usually support me, and give Halton a Conservative candidate who will represent about 2% of the population.
While Canadians who claim Christian faith have various views about these single issues, Defend Marriage Canada and many of it’s fundamentalist cousin groups are very pro active in single issue (value voting) pushes.
I’d like to get more information on this group, they are a coalition of various sorts. (ie: REAL Women Canada - similar to Phylis Shaflay’s Eagle Forum)
66% of Canadians do not want the Harper government revisiting the bill C-38 debate.
The Canadian Family Action Coalition are a Calgary based fundamentalist group going after politicians, media, sexuality, law, taxes. There denominational affialiations are clear but political and social stances mirror these other groups. This group could use some digging to - it’s late but it appears some of it’s sponsors are also sponsors of ECP - Tristan Emmanuel’s religious right lobby group. Emmanual attended Vision America’s War on Christian’s conference ( I need to check connections here further also)
small dead animals has information on McVety’s lobby methods. He is (was?) an active member of the Conservative Party.
