I use Sacred Space - a site run by Jesuits for a few moments of quiet reflection, I’m not wedded to one method of renewal, but I’m really glad this site is available. It works for me, it’s simple, uncluttered, contemplative.
Lately I’ve been covering a fair bit of church polity conventions and because my personality is what it is, I find the politics of denomination personally soul sucking. A deep weariness settles in after hours of research. For some people it’s invigorating, we have different gifts.
Frustration sets in easily when I begin to wander through the discussions of structure and I want to escape in easy ways. This is so timely for me right now, it’s the intro to this months readings.
Published 2 years, 1 month agoIf prayer is a lifting of the mind and heart to God, then you, who do the lifting, need to be in charge of your mind and heart. You face competitors. It is difficult even to reach the Sacred Space website without battling your way through a barrage of pictures and advertisements offering you holidays, medications, cheap watches, endless things to covet. You face the philosophy of the market-place: greed is good — buy what I am offering you. Many hucksters are competing for my mind, my heart and my credit card. How do I stay in charge? By guarding my eyes and ears which are the gateways to my heart and mind. Build a personal spam filter into your eyes and ears, a half-automatic delete key to use on whatever distracts me from the Lord. It may have been easier for St Augustine, but his words still help: You have made us for yourself, Lord, and our hearts are restless till they rest in you.
