A new Pew Internet and American Life Project study says only 34 percent of bloggers consider themselves as alternatives to tradition (or mainstream) media.
There are some that think they are new media, or a replacement for what they see as a corrupt, liberal or dying traditional (or mainstream) media, that number wasn’t factored in.
65% do not see their blogging as a form of alternative journalism
1/3 said they source facts or link to source material
40% don’t quote media or sources directly
61% said they rarely or never get permission to post copyrighted material
11% said they post corrections
77% see blogging as a hobby, not a vocation
55% write under a pseudonym
The survey was conducted between July 2005 - February 2006 with 233 self identified bloggers. 12 million Americans have a blog - 57 million Americans read blogs
Other findings:
- 8 percent of Americans have a blog
- 9 out of 10 blogs have comment sections
- four out of five blogs are text, 72% use pictures
- 30 percent of blogs post audio links
- 54% of bloggers are under 30
- 4o% are none-white
- blogs are equally divided between males and females
