Neale News is carrying a story from a site called TMZ about what really happened when Gibson was arrested this week on drunk driving charges.
Roh Dreher weighs in at Beliefnet.
And even though Gibson’s father is an open anti-Semite, I didn’t think it was fair at all to blame the son for the sins of the father, or to put Mel Gibson in the position of having to denounce his father in public. In fact, I was kind of proud of him for refusing to be baited into denouncing his father, even though his father holds objectively wicked views and isn’t shy about sharing them with the world. There’s something dishonorable about people who denounce their parents, I think.
But now, if this latest report is true, there can be no doubt that Mel Gibson himself is a Jew-hater. How sad. He will have brought on himself all the opprobrium that will come to him. The Catholic friend who wrote to give me the news said “Well, you have to give the Devil his due: Beelzebub is nothing if not a pro.”
Mel Gibson statement on his arrest.
“Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
“I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health.”
No apology to Jews, who were the recipients of his vindictives, but that is not uncommon for an alcoholic. Their first thought is self-preservation, by apologizing to the Sheriff’s department, things might go easier for him. While law enforcement has to be concerned with more than the arrest of a celebrity, I don’t think anyone was served with a false report. Gibson acknowledges his alcoholism and he needs to deal with it. If the report is true, he blew .12, 4 points above legal limit. That’s a lot of hate for a little drunk.
His fans are going to be seriously disappointed with this news.

It is a sad thing that such a great actor like Mel Gibson suffers from alcoholism, but I wonder where the VIP should step back for letting the human step forward. I have seen a lot of undesirable things done by VIPs. I am admiring his career and I am trully sorry for what happened, and most of all I am really sorry for all the people who had to suffer from this, morally speaking…
Celebrity meltdowns are nothing new, and I don’t believe for a second anyone chooses to be an addict.
This event was spectacularly hateful and incredibly sad.
He has his next movie coming out, fans will forget and judge his project on it’s merit.
But you are right, Gibson needs help, needs time to address his addiction and the issues underneath. He is 50, he did not get to this place overnight.
His celebrity status, world, work and mentality may hinder opportunities he can take for recovery, and like anyone battling addiction he has serious choices to make in his life, starting with…”I admit I am powerless over alcohol, that my life has become unmanageable…”
Mel is weird. Check him out!
