The United Church of Canada has selected a new moderator at it’s 39th general council being held in Thunder Bay Ontario.

Rev. David Giuliano who has been working in Marathon Ontario was elected by the 400 delegates after four votes. He was one of five candidates and is replacing Rev. Peter Short. Moderators serve a three year term.

This week’s general council raised some eyebrows when it passed a resolution urging it’s members not to purchase bottled water. The church will also offer five week courses on clean drinking water, pollution and water access.

The United Church claims about 2.9 million members, although about 1/4 million attend services weekly. It was founded in 1925 and is the largest protestant denomination in Canada. The church focuses on social issues and began with a merger between the  Presbyterian Church in Canada, the Methodist Church of Canada, and the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec.
