Bartholomew’s Notes on Religion has religious background on the rise of Pentecostalism due to mission efforts in the Arctic and why Inuit converts would perceive the Qajartalik Island petroglyphs as defiling their ‘pentecostal land’ as opposed to being a major archaeological find and of heritage value.
Richard’s post also looks at similar kind of neo-pentecostal beliefs in Africa, Fiji, the Nunavit supporters of a pentecostal politician and Christian Zionist influence.
The 1500 year old rock carvings were seriously damaged within the past couple of months, and are accessible only by boat.
Reports in some newspapers in southern Canada suggest local people may have done the damage because their religious beliefs, perhaps believing the petroglyphs are pagan images.
That suggestion has raised objections from Mary Piluqtuut, mayor of Kangirsujuaq.
She investigated the reports as soon as she heard them, she told CBC Radio.
Even though many people in the community do have strong religious beliefs, Piluqtuut says she knows they would not do anything like that.
Piluqtuut says people in her community care about the carvings and they support the protection of them.
From what she understands, she says the damage was done much earlier than this spring.
There are 8 main Inuit tribal groups.

I went to a search engine to see photos of the site. I finally found a link that had more than words only the photos were ??? close-ups of the carvings. It would have been nice to see a photo from a distance with a comparable object (person??) beside it to get a perspective on the size of these interesting carvings. Why wasn’t there such a photo provided? There may be one farther down on one of the subsequent pages, buy my time is valuable & I didn’t want to search & search only to not find what I was looking for. There should be a link close to the beginning of the list that has many photos to draw interest from the public. Such a well kept secret only deserves to be lost because those in the know didn’t do their ‘homework’ Shame on them. To become high profile with the public you have to make noise & plenty of it…..in the media…with the proper gov’t ministers & then with the media again if the ministers ignore you. You know how the media loves to bash elected officials.
