Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has canceled its plans to stage a protest at the funerals of the five Amish girls executed in their Pennsylvania school, a church official said Wednesday. Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of church’s pastor, told FOXNews.com the group canceled the protests in exchange for an hour of radio time Thursday on syndicated talk-show host Mike Gallagher’s radio program. Church officials would have to sign a document making them liable for the airtime if they broke their promise not to demonstrate.

It’s awful for me to give up an hour of my radio show … but I think it’s worth the sacrifice to keep them away,” Gallagher said.

But Phelps-Roper defended the church’s initial decision to protest at the Amish girls’ funerals.

Those Amish people, everyone is sitting around talking about those poor little girls — blah, blah, blah — they brought the wrath upon themselves,” Phelps-Roper said, adding that the Amish “don’t serve God, they serve themselves.”

On the Westboro Baptist Church site, they made it clear “these protests will be against Rendell (Pennsylvania governor) for “slanderous” statements against the church.” (the church - meaning Westboro)

    Unbelieveable!

There’s a load of irony in the statement, the Amish “don’t serve God, they serve themselves.” I can’t imagine anything more self-serving that what we see and hear from the Phelps.

I think the irony is lost on the Phelps.

OK, I knew Phelps was a wing-nut but now he hates the Amish? THE AMish are self-serving????

    Give me a break.

I find it very difficult during times like this to locate some kind of compassion and not turn to rage for these obviously sick and twisted members of the Westboro Bastist Church. Is it wrong to hope that someday soon they will all die in a fiery car crash?

This church, it’s leaders and followers are the sinners. They have no approval from GOD to judge others and to cause pain and heartache upon the world.

Jesus was a loving Minister of GOD’S word and only GOD can judge. To take it upon themselves to verbally attack, harass, and cause such negativity behind the Christian faith proves to me that they are only doing Satan’s bidding. Their goal? To repel others from Christianity through their lawfully savvy tactics, and hate that is demonstrated by the Phelps’ sister’s anger. She was out of control and is probably mentally unstable. That is evil……..pure, yet brilliant, evil.

What amazes me about this group is that they target the very organizations that fought and died over the years in order for them to be allowed the right to shoot off their mouths. If they behaved in this manner in certain other countries they would probably be tongueless.
