US Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld has resigned. He is being replaced by former CIA chief Robert Gates who headed the agency from 1991-1993.
Rumsfield has had a long and controversial career in politics.

1973: Ambassador to Nato
1974: Chief of staff to Gerald Ford
1975: Defence secretary to Ford
1983: Visits Iraq and meets Saddam Hussein as US repairs relations with Baghdad
2001: Defence secretary
2006: Resigns the defence portfolio
He had previously offered to resign twice when the 2004 scandal over Abu Ghraib broke.
Published 1 year, 11 months agoDuring his news conference, the president came close to admitting that he told an untruth when he informed reporters last week that Mr Rumsfeld would stay on. He said he had told them that because he did not want the issue to be injected into the campaign. He admitted that, at that stage, he had already spoken to Mr Rumsfeld about the need for a “fresh perspective”.
