Kenneth Copeland and Kenneth Hagin were two well known Pentecostal (third wave) televangelists in the US that advocate a practice orthodox Christians say is aberrant, unscriptural and dangerous.
You can see why for yourself on this video where they engage in ‘holy laughter, drunk and erratic behavior, howling, birdlike calls and includes ‘carpet time’ (landing on the floor) twitching in what look like epileptic seizures.
Note the scripture used to justify this behavior. Proponents say these behaviors are manifestations from the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. This has nothing to do with the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and is the same kind of behavior exhibited in the Kundalini practices in the Hindu faith and some new age groups.
If you wish to look deeper into why this theology and manifestation has no place in the live of a grounded, growing Christian I recommend Cross+Word out of the UK. Trish Tillen came out of this movement and was writing about it’s errors long before most people. The truths hold true today.
I am ashamed to say this movement was imported into Canada and called The Toronto Blessing. Many many people have been deceived. Canada then exported this deception to thousands of people.
This type of event claimed to be ‘of God’ has been documented into the 1700’s, various countries and mass hysteria does not fully explain this behavior. Learned apppropriate response to certain stimuli, CNS excitation to expected stimuli, and suggestion have also been looked at by medical scientists.
The Apologetics Index has information regarding it’s founders E.W. Kenyon, Rodney Howard Brown, (who calls himself the Holy Spirit Bartender) it’s heretical Latter Rain, Kansas City Prophets and Word/Faith connections.

Mass hysteria is not a pretty sight, particularly in church. I remember people from our part of the USA flying up to Canada to be a part of this “movement of the spirit.” Too many people today want to substitute their personal feelings for time spent reading the Bible. We have replaced God-centeredness with me-centeredness even in the church. We have forsaken true worship for a thrill ride.
I recently read a book by Craig Borlase in which he quotes Jackie Pullinger (who ministers among gangs and addicts in Hong Kong):
“Rich Christians were jumping on airplanes to visit the place where the laughter was… We thought to ourselves, it will only be a matter of time before they board airplanes to visit the places where the crying is. We waited. But you didn’t come.”
