The motion read:

“That this house call on the government to introduce legislation to restore the traditional definition of marriage without affecting civil unions, and while respecting existing same sex marriages.”

Canadians wanted a free vote by the 39th Parliament (a vote of conscience) which they feel didn’t happen first time around with Bill C-38.
I am sympathetic to those who genuinely fear and believe the concept of male/female marriage is lost to them. I can appreciate many haven’t read the ruling, or the history and haven’t had an opportunity to explore their fears and concerns being promoted by religious right leaders about clergy coercion. They may not have read the charter. Talk about what children are being taught in school has also been exaggerated, but they might not know that or agree with sex education at all. And if they have explored Bill C-38 carefully and still believe as they do, that is most certainly their right.

Today Canadians got their free vote, the Liberals were not whipped, nor were Conservatives - Yeas 123, Nays 175.

Bill C-38, signed into law, July 20, 2005 will stand.
After the Bill was passed, many came  from the US and Israel, which will recognize same sex unions performed in other countries.

Statistics Canada 2001 says:

A total of 34,200 same-sex common-law couples were counted in Canada in 2001, representing 0.5% of all couples.
According to Canadians for Equal Marriage 12,438 marriage licences have been issued.
