57 young adults are taking the Soulforce Equality 2007 ride. They have been intensely trained in none violence techniques and theology. They are going across the US in two buses to  32 Christian colleges and universities where many of the students have never met someone like them.

The 25 people on the Soulforce West bus ran into trouble their first night in Sioux City Iowa. Soulforce had negotiated with the staff of Dordt College, which has a discrimination policy against gay students. They were to be welcomed on campus.
That night, they were harassed at their hotel and the bus was vandalized. Dordt College maintenance staff cleaned it for them.

The local paper covered the vandalism.

“This is the reality created by fear and misunderstanding,” said Katie Higgins, co-director of the group. “It saddens me that people have such hatred in their hearts, but this just demonstrates why we feel called to spread our message of the inherent worth and dignity of all human beings.”

Wednesday night, three vehicles repeatedly circled the hotel where the riders were staying, DeVries said, and the people in them were making lewd comments and gestures such as dropping their pants. Thursday morning, he said they woke up to find anti-gay slurs, including foul language, written on the side of the bus.

“We’re prepared to run into things like this, but we didn’t expect it on the first night,” he said. The riders left Minneapolis on Wednesday to start their tour east across the country. “That this happened really shows how these words become actions. If you have an anti-gay policy, it’s only a matter of time until someone takes it to the extreme of vandalism, which can lead to violence.”

No one knows if the vandals were residents of Sioux City or Dordt College students - the comments under the newspaper article are probably being watched by campus security and local police, it appears some bragging may be going on.
The ignorance, judgement and anger from people is difficult to read, as it must be for Soulforce members to face; for it extends well past the gay and lesbian community, and  wounds are deep.

Soulforce East was invited onto Notre Dame campus. But not for long.

Right about that time, we got word that four of our members distributing booklets and buttons requested of them by students had been given official written notices instructing them to leave campus and never return lest they be arrested for “criminal trespassing.” So just as we were escorted on, we were escorted off.

Soulforce Equality riders are blogging their journey.
